Adjustment



The front wheel bearings on the 4MATIC are not adjustable. If the bearings become loose or make noise, they must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Install 1 wheel bolt (48a) in the flange on the opposite side of the locking bolt.
  6.  
  7. Push the brake pads into the caliper until they are clear of the rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the grease cap (9e).
  10.  
  11. Loosen the bolt (9i) and tighten the clamping nut (9d) while turning the rotor until all bearing play is eliminated.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the clamping nut until play is detectable.
  14.  
  15. Mount a dial indicator (022) on the hub with the measuring tip on the end of the spindle.
  16.  
  17. Turn the clamping nut to adjust the play while pulling and pushing on the rotor to measure the bearing play. Correct bearing play should be 0.0004-0.0008 inches (0.01-0.02mm).
  18.  
  19. Torque the bolt on the clamping nut to 96 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and recheck the bearing play again. If the play is within specification, assemble the wheel. If not, repeat the procedure.

4-Matic

The front wheel bearings on the 4-Matic are not adjustable. If the bearings become loose or make noise, they must be replaced.

Except E Class 4-Matic
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Install 1 wheel bolt (48a) in the flange on the opposite side of the locking bolt.
  6.  
  7. Push the brake pads into the caliper until they are clear of the rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the grease cap (9e).
  10.  
  11. Loosen the bolt (9i) and tighten the clamping nut (9d) while turning the rotor until all bearing play is eliminated.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the clamping nut until play is detectable.
  14.  
  15. Mount a dial indicator (022) on the hub with the measuring tip on the end of the spindle.
  16.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    12-point axle nut (61)
     
    Front axle distributor connector
     
    Speed and brake lining sensor wires and position out of the way
     
    Brake disc (34)
     
    Splash shield (35)
     
    Speed sensor and bracket (5f)
     
    Tie rod end (10a)
     
    Ball joint (7)
     
    Follower joint (8)
     
    Steering knuckle
     
    Axle flange
     
    Snapring
     
    Bearing assembly using a press
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Press a new bearing into the knuckle and install the snapring.
  2.  
  3. Press the axle flange into the bearing.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle
     
    Follower joint. Torque the nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
     
    Ball joint. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
     
    Tie rod end. Torque the nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
     
    Speed sensor and bracket
     
    Splash shield
     
    Brake disc
     
    Sensor wiring
     
    Axle distributor connector
     
    12-point axle nut. Torque the nut to 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm).
     
    Front wheel

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    12-point axle nut (61)
     
    Front axle distributor connector
     
    Speed and brake lining sensor wires and position out of the way
     
    Brake disc (34)
     
    Splash shield (35)
     
    Speed sensor and bracket (5f)
     
    Tie rod end (10a)
     
    Ball joint (7)
     
    Follower joint (8)
     
    Steering knuckle
     
    Axle flange
     
    Snapring
     
    Bearing assembly using a press
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Press a new bearing into the knuckle and install the snapring.
  2.  
  3. Press the axle flange into the bearing.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle
     
    Follower joint. Torque the nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
     
    Ball joint. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
     
    Tie rod end. Torque the nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
     
    Speed sensor and bracket
     
    Splash shield
     
    Brake disc
     
    Sensor wiring
     
    Axle distributor connector
     
    12-point axle nut. Torque the nut to 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm).
     

  6.  

Except 4matic
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Grease cap
     
    Clamping nut and washer
     
    Wheel hub
     
    Grease seal
     
    Bearing
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing
     
    Grease seal
     
    Wheel hub
     
    Washer and clamping nut
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust bearing play. Torque the clamp bolt to 96 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Fill the grease cap to the flared edge with high temperature roller bearing grease and install the cap.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Grease cap
     
    Clamping nut and washer
     
    Wheel hub
     
    Grease seal
     
    Bearing
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing
     
    Grease seal
     
    Wheel hub
     
    Washer and clamping nut
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust bearing play. Torque the clamp bolt to 96 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Fill the grease cap to the flared edge with high temperature roller bearing grease and install the cap.

    Rotor and caliper

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing
     
    Grease seal
     
    Wheel hub
     
    Washer and clamping nut
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust bearing play. Torque the clamp bolt to 96 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  4.  
  5. Fill the grease cap to the flared edge with high temperature roller bearing grease and install the cap.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Rotor and caliper
     
    Front wheel
