Fuel Pump

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Empty the fuel tank into a suitable container.
  8.  
  9. Raise the left rear seat approximately 20 inches (50 cm).
  10.  
  11. Lift the carpeting to gain access to the fuel pump cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fuel pump cover
     
    Fuel pump electrical connector

NOTE
Be sure not to kink the fuel pipes.



Supply and return fuel pipes clips and the pipes
 
Union nut mounting the fuel pump-to-the tank
 
Fuel pump from the tank
 

To install:


NOTE
Lightly oil the fuel pump sealing O-ring to simplify the installation.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel pump into the tank using a new union nut and O-ring. Tighten the union nut to 50 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Supply and return lines to the fuel pump
     
    Fuel pump electrical connector
     
    Fuel pump access cover and the rear seat
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the fuel tank.

    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Read fault memory, encode the radio and normalize the power windows.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intake, outlet and bypass lines. Plug the lines.
     
    Electrical leads
     
    Fuel pump and vibration pads

To install:


NOTE
Some models utilize 2 fuel pumps connected in series.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel pump and vibration pads
     
    Electrical leads
     
    Intake, outlet and bypass lines. Torque the cap nuts and banjo bolts to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-30 Nm).

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel pump and vibration pads
     
    Electrical leads
     
    Intake, outlet and bypass lines. Torque the cap nuts and banjo bolts to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-30 Nm).

  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Empty the fuel tank into a suitable container.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear seat cushion.
  10.  
  11. Lift the carpeting to gain access to the fuel pump cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure not to kink the fuel pipes.



    Fuel filter
     
    Fuel pump cover
     
    Fuel pump electrical connector
     



    Supply and return fuel pipes clips and the pipes
     
    Union nut mounting the fuel pump-to-the tank
     
    Fuel pump from the tank
     

  14.  

To install:


NOTE
Lightly oil the fuel pump sealing O-ring to simplify the installation.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel pump into the tank using a new union nut and O-ring. Tighten the union nut to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Supply and return lines to the fuel pump
     
    Fuel pump electrical connector
     
    Fuel filter
     
    Fuel pump access cover and the rear seat
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the fuel tank.

    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Read fault memory, encode the radio and normalize the power windows.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    NOTE
    The roof must be closed in order to access the fuel tank assembly.

  3. Empty the fuel tank.
  4.  
  5. Remove the top of the fuel tank cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the insulation mat, then detach the electrical connection.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel filter and fuel sender assemblies.
  10.  
  11. Press together the snap bracket and pull the electrical connector out from the bottom.
  12.  
  13. Twist the rotary valve, then take out the fuel pump.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use a new sealing ring. Tighten the filter flange nuts until just snug.
