Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Center the steering wheel and turn the key to the lock position. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
  6.  
  7. Drain the power steering reservoir.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fluid level feed line, if equipped with level control
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Pressure and return lines
     
    Steering gear return line
     
    Steering coupling heat shield
     
    Steering coupling
     
    Control valve connector, if equipped with speed sensitive steering
     
    Steering gear retainer bolts (23g)
     
    Steering gear
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear with new locking nuts. Torque to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Control valve connector
     
    Control valve coupling. Torque the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Steering gear return line
     
    Pressure and return lines with new O-rings. Torque the fittings to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Heat shield
     
    Tie rod ends with new nuts. Torque the nuts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    Fluid level feed line
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the reservoir with fresh fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times. The system will bleed Automatically. Check for leaks.
  4.  
  5. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front axle housing
     
    Track rod
     
    Pressure and return lines
     
    Steering coupling heat shield
     
    Steering coupling
     
    Steering gear retainer bolts
     
    Steering gear

To install:



Steering gear. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
 
Steering coupling. Torque the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
 
Steering coupling heat shield
 
Pressure and return lines. Torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
 
Track rod. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
 
Front axle housing
 

  1. Refill the power steering reservoir with fresh fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times. The system will bleed automatically. Check for leaks.
  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Center the steering wheel and turn the key to the lock position. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
  6.  
  7. Drain the power steering reservoir.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fluid level feed line if equipped with level control
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Pressure and return lines
     
    Steering gear return line
     
    Steering coupling heat shield
     
    Steering coupling
     
    Control valve connector if equipped with speed sensitive steering
     
    Steering gear retainer bolts (23g)
     
    Steering gear
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear with new locking nuts. Torque to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Control valve connector
     
    Control valve coupling. Torque the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Steering gear return line
     
    Pressure and return lines with new O-rings. Torque the fittings to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Heat shield
     
    Tie rod ends with new nuts. Torque the nuts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Fluid level feed line
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the reservoir with fresh fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times. The system will bleed autoMatically. Check for leaks.

  5. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear with new locking nuts. Torque to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Control valve connector
     
    Control valve coupling. Torque the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Steering gear return line
     
    Pressure and return lines with new O-rings. Torque the fittings to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Heat shield
     
    Tie rod ends with new nuts. Torque the nuts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Fluid level feed line
     
    Negative battery cable

    Steering gear retainer bolts (23g)

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear with new locking nuts. Torque to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees except on C, CLK Class and 2000-02 E Class. On C and CLK Class, tighten to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm). On 2000-02 E Class, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) plus an additional 60 degrees
     
    Control valve connector
     
    Control valve coupling. Torque the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) on 2000-02 E Class, 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) on all others
     
    Steering gear return line
     
    Pressure and return lines with new O-rings. On models with retaining plates, tighten the bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm). On models without retaining plates, tighten the high pressure hose to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) and the return line to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Heat shield
     
    Tie rod ends with new nuts. Torque the nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees except on 2000-02 E Class. On these models, tighten yellow marked tie rods to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) and silver or blue ones to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
     
    Fluid level feed line
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the reservoir with fresh fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times. The system will bleed Automatically. Check for leaks.
  4.  
  5. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
