Halfshaft

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Collar hold down bolt or nut (in hub)
     
    Brake caliper. Suspend it with a wire.
     
    Wheel speed sensor
     
    If additional clearance is needed, the exhaust system
     

  4.  
  5. Support the lower arm so that the halfshaft is horizontal.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The halfshaft may either be secured to the differential flange with bolts or it may slide in and be secured with a spring clip. If attached with bolts, remove them. If it slides in, use a lever tool to -pop- the halfshaft out of the differential.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft. On flange type halfshafts, tighten the M10 bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) and the M12 bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    Rear axle knuckle assembly
     
    Exhaust system, if removed
     
    Wheel speed sensor
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Collar hold down bolt or nut. Tighten to 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm) except on CL, S Class, 2003-05 E Class and 2003-05 SL Class. On these models, tighten to 236 ft. lbs. (320 Nm)
     
    Wheel
