Brake Caliper

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the ignition switch staysOFF
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Brake pad wear sensor
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Hydraulic line, loosen only
     

  6.  
  7. Use a back-up wrench to hold the guide pins and remove the caliper screw.
  8.  
  9. Lift the caliper off the carrier and unscrew it from the hydraulic line.
  10.

To install:

  1. Thread the caliper onto the hydraulic line and hand-tighten it. Fit the caliper into place on the carrier. Install new micro-encapsulated screws. Torque the screw to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm), on C Class, E Class and CLK. Torque the screw to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm), on all other models.

  3. Connect the parking brake cable and wear sensor.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheels.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Make sure the ignition switch stays OFF and pump the brake pedal 25-35 times to relieve the system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Brake pad wear sensor
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Hydraulic line, loosen only
     

  6.  
  7. Use a back-up wrench to hold the guide pins and remove the caliper screw.
  8.  
  9. Lift the caliper off the carrier and unscrew it from the hydraulic line.

To install:

  1. Thread the caliper onto the hydraulic line and hand-tighten it. Fit the caliper into place on the carrier. Install new micro-encapsulated screws. Torque the screw to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm), on C Class, E Class and CLK. Torque the screw to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm), on all other models.

  3. Connect the parking brake cable and wear sensor.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheels.

Floating Caliper
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with ABS, make sure the ignition switch staysOFF
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the parking brake cable.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the hydraulic line.
  10.  
  11. Use a back-up wrench to hold the guide pins and remove the caliper bolts.
  12.  
  13. Lift the caliper off the carrier and unscrew it from the hydraulic line. Discard the washers.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Thread the caliper onto the hydraulic line and hand-tighten it. Fit the caliper into place on the carrier. Torque the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the brake line. Torque to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Bleed the brakes.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheels.
  8.
