Coil Springs

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Rollover bar switch on the SL Class
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Cross brace
     
    Brake lining sensor wire
     

  4.  
  5. Jack up the lower control arm until the axle shaft is horizontal. Be careful not to raise the vehicle off the lift.
  6.  
  7. Compress the spring with an internal spring compressor. Do not use air tools to compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the bolt securing the lower control arm to the axle carrier. Remove the spring with the lower mount.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Clean the spring mounting surface.
  2.  
  3. Position the spring on the lower control arm and release the spring compressor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the jack from the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Brake lining sensor wire
     
    Cross brace
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Rollover bar switch
     
    Rear wheel
     

  8.  
  9. Torque the lower control arm-to-axle carrier nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Rollover bar switch on the SL Class
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Cross brace
     
    Brake lining sensor wire
     

  4.  
  5. Jack up the lower control arm until the axle shaft is horizontal. Be careful not to raise the vehicle off the lift.
  6.  
  7. Compress the spring with an internal spring compressor. Do not use air tools to compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the bolt securing the lower control arm to the axle carrier. Remove the spring with the lower mount.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Clean the spring mounting surface.
  2.  
  3. Position the spring on the lower control arm and release the spring compressor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the jack from the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Brake lining sensor wire
     
    Cross brace
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Rollover bar switch
     
    Rear wheel
     

  8.  
  9. Torque the lower control arm-to-axle carrier nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  10.

To install:

  1. Clean the spring mounting surface.

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Cross brace
     
    Lower control arm cover

    Rear wheel
     

  8.  
  9. Torque the lower control arm-to-axle carrier nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  10.
