Lower Ball Joint


Removal & Installation

The upper ball joint is an integral part of the upper control arm. Control arm replacement is necessary if the ball joint becomes worn or damaged.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  3. Remove the front wheel and support the lower control arm with a jack.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Electrical connections if equipped
    Ball joint stud
    Control arm mounting bolts
    Bearing shell


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm in the bearing shell. Torque the self-locking nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) after the weight of the vehicle is on the suspension
    Control arm assembly using new micro-encapsulated bolts. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    Ball joint stud. Torque the nut to 88 ft. lbs. (120 Nm). Fill the gap in the clamp with a wax-like protectant.

  3. Front wheel
  5. Lower the vehicle to the floor and tighten the control arm through-bolt and nut to the specification.
