Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. On models with Automatic level control (ALC), release the pressure from the system.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm.
  6.  


WARNING
Be sure that the piston rod does not turn when the removing the nut. The mount for the operating piston may loosen and release the gas and oil from the shock absorber.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Pressure lines, on ALC models
     
    Upper shock absorber mounting nuts
     
    Rollover bar switch, on convertible models
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting bolt
     
    Shock absorber

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber
     
    Lower mounting bolt. Torque to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Rollover bar switch
     
    Pressure lines, on ALC models. . Torque the banjo bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and install the spacer, upper bushing, washer and new self-locking nuts. Torque the bottom nut to 11-13 ft. lbs. (15-18 Nm) and the upper nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper strut mounting with the vehicle on the floor.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Fender liner
     
    Top shock mounting nuts
     
    Lower shock mounting bolt
     
    Support lower control am
     
    Torsion bar link rod
     
    Lower control arm
     
    Shock/spring assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Compress the spring and remove the shock absorber.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber
     
    Shock/spring assembly
     
    Lower control arm. Torque to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    Torsion bar link rod. Torque to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Lower strut mounting bolt. Torque to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm)
     
    Top strut mounting nuts. Torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Fender liner
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm.
    WARNING
    Be sure that the piston rod does not turn when the removing the nut. The mount for the operating piston may loosen and release the gas and oil from the shock absorber.

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper shock absorber mounting nuts
     
    Rollover bar switch on convertible models
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting bolt
     
    Shock absorber
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber
     
    Lower mounting bolt. Torque to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Rollover bar switch
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and install the spacer, upper bushing, washer and new self-locking nuts. Torque the bottom nut to 11-13 ft. lbs. (15-18 Nm) and the upper nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber
     
    Lower mounting bolt. Torque to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Rollover bar switch
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and install the spacer, upper bushing, washer and new self-locking nuts. Torque the bottom nut to 11-13 ft. lbs. (15-18 Nm) and the upper nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

    Rollover bar switch, on convertible models
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting bolt
     
    Shock absorber

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber
     
    Lower mounting bolt. Torque to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) except on 2005 SLK Class, 2003-05 CLK500 and 2004-05 CLK320. On these models, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Lower control arm cover
     
    Rollover bar switch
     
    Pressure lines, on ALC models. . Torque the banjo bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and install the spacer, upper bushing, washer and new self-locking nuts. Torque the bottom nut to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) on 2005 SLK Class, 2003-05 E Class, 2003-05 CLK500 and 2004-05 CLK320. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) on 2001-05 C Class. Tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) on all other models. If equipped, tighten the upper lock nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
