Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Hex nuts and magnet body
     
    Water pump housing
     

  4.  


NOTE
The magnet carrier is glued to the water pump housing and should not be pulled off.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump housing and gasket. Torque combination screws to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Magnet body and hex nuts
     
    Water pump pulley. Torque the screws to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cooling fan and clutch, then the fan shroud
     

  4.  


NOTE
The fan clutch is equipped with right-hand thread.

  1. Drain the engine coolant.

    Engine cover
     

  2.  
  3. Lock the automatic belt tensioner by rotating the tensioner counterclockwise until a 5mm drift or pin fits through the tensioner.

    Serpentine belt
     
    Coolant hoses from the water pump
     
    Belt pulley
     
    Water pump mounting bolts
     
    Water pump
     

  4.  
  5. Clean and dry the gasket mating surface for the water pump.
  6.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump and gasket. Tighten the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and the M8 bolts to 177 inch lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Water pump belt pulley and tighten the mounting bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Coolant hoses to the water pump
     
    Serpentine belt and remove the locking pin
     
    Engine cover
     
    Fan shroud and fan
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with coolant.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Read fault memory, encode the radio and normalize the power windows.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Engine cover if equipped
     
    Accessory drive belt and tensioner
     
    Secondary air injection switchover valve if equipped
     
    Power steering pump and position the pump aside, leaving the hoses attached
     
    Water pump coolant hoses
     
    Oil-to-water heat exchanger coolant hoses, if equipped
     
    Belt pulley
     
    Water pump mounting bolts
     
    Water pump
     

  6.  
  7. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install the water pump and gasket. Torque the bolts as follows:

    3.2L (104) and 4.2L, 5.0L (119) engines: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    1.8L and 2.3L (111) engines: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    2.6L, 2.8L and 3.2L (112) and 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.5L (113) engines : M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    6.0L (120) engine: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Belt pulley and torque the mounting bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Oil-to-water heat exchanger coolant hoses
     
    Water pump coolant hoses
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Secondary air injection switchover valve
     
    Accessory drive belt and tensioner
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Engine cover
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Engine cover if equipped
     
    Accessory drive belt and tensioner
     
    Secondary air injection switchover valve if equipped
     
    Power steering pump. Position the pump aside, leaving the hoses attached
     
    Water pump coolant hoses
     
    Oil-to-water heat exchanger coolant hoses if equipped
     
    Belt pulley
     
    Water pump mounting bolts
     
    Water pump
     

  6.  
  7. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install the water pump and gasket. Torque the bolts as follows:

    2.8L, 3.2L, 3.6L (104) and 4.2L, 5.0L (119) engines: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    2.2L and 2.3L (111) engines: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    3.2L (112) and 4.3 (113) engines: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    6.0L (120) engine: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Belt pulley. Torque the mounting bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Oil-to-water heat exchanger coolant hoses
     
    Water pump coolant hoses
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Secondary air injection switchover valve
     
    Accessory drive belt and tensioner
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Engine cover
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil-to-water heat exchanger coolant hoses, if equipped
     
    Belt pulley
     
    Shock absorber from coolant pump if equipped
     
    Water pump mounting bolts
     
    Water pump
     

  6.  
  7. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  8.

Fig. On M272 engines, tighten the M7 (A bolts) in the proper sequence

  1. Install the water pump and gasket. Torque the bolts as follows:

    M111 engine: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm), M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    M112 and M113 engines with pre-tapped holes: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm), M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    M112 and M113 engines without pre-tapped holes: M6 bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm), M8 bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    M271 engine: M6 bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm), M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    M272 engine: tighten in correct sequence; M7 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm), M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Belt pulley and torque the mounting bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Oil-to-water heat exchanger coolant hoses
     
    Water pump coolant hoses
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Secondary air injection switchover valve
     
    Accessory drive belt and tensioner
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Engine cover
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  

Diesel Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The magnet carrier is glued to the water pump housing and should not be pulled off.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Hex nuts and magnet body
     
    Water pump housing

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Engine cover if equipped
     
    Accessory drive belt and tensioner
     
    Secondary air injection switchover valve if equipped
     
    Power steering pump. Position the pump aside, leaving the hoses attached
     
    Water pump coolant hoses
     
    Oil-to-water heat exchanger coolant hoses if equipped
     
    Belt pulley
     
    Water pump mounting bolts
     
    Water pump
     

  6.  
  7. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.

  1. Install the water pump and gasket. Torque the bolts as follows:

    2.8L, 3.2L, 3.6L (104) and 4.2L, 5.0L (119) engines: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    2.2L and 2.3L (111) engines: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    3.2L (112) and 4.3 (113) engines: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    6.0L (120) engine: M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Belt pulley. Torque the mounting bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Oil-to-water heat exchanger coolant hoses
     
    Water pump coolant hoses
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Secondary air injection switchover valve
     
    Accessory drive belt and tensioner
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Engine cover
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
