Blower Motor

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1974-76 240D, 230, 280, 280C and 300D Models



  1. Remove the heater box.
  2.  
  3. Back out the three retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Slightly pull out the blower and remove the electrical plug and the blower.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. To prevent leaks, install the three screws with three new special washers exactly like those removed.
  8.  

1977-78 230; 1977-83 240D, 280E, 280CE, 300D; 1977-84 300CD and 300TD Models

  1. Remove the cover from under the right side of the instrument panel.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the plug from the blower motor.
  4.  
  5. Unscrew the contact plate screw, lift the contact plate and disconnect both wires to the series resistor.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the blower motor flange screws and lift out the blower motor.
  8.  
  9. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  10.  

1978-80 280S, 280SE, 300SD, 450SE, 450SEL and 6.9 Models

  1. Disconnect the series resistor plug at the fire wall.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew both mounting bolts and remove the series resistor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air inlet grille.
  6.  
  7. Remove the glove box.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cover from under the right side of the instrument panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hose between the center air duct and the right side ring nozzle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clamp and then disconnect the cable control at the lever.
  14.  
  15. Unscrew both mounting nuts and remove the blower motor.
  16.  

On installation, make sure that the rubber seal between the blower motor and the firewall is not damaged and that the rubber grommet for the connecting cable is correctly seated.

  1. Guide the connecting cable through the air duct on the firewall and into the water box.
  2.  
  3. Insert the blower motor into the housing, position the mounting nuts and then push the blower motor to the left (as far as possible) while tightening.
  4.  
  5. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of installation.
  6.  

380SL, 380SLC, 450SL and 450SLC Models

  1. Working in the engine compartment, unscrew the eight (8) mounting screws and remove the panel which covers the blower motor.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the plug from the series resistor at the firewall.
  4.  
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and then remove the series resistor.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the four (4) blower motor retaining nuts and lift out the motor.
  8.  
  9. Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Be sure that the rubber sealing strip is not damaged.
  10.  

1981-84 300SD, 380SE, 380SEL, 380SEC, 500SEL and 500SEC Models

  1. Remove the cover from under the right side of the instrument panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cover for the blower motor and disconnect the two-prong plug.
  4.  
  5. Remove the retaining bolts on the blower motor flange and then remove the blower motor.
  6.  
  7. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  8.  

190D and 190E Models

  1. Open the hood to a 90- position and then remove the wiper arms.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the retaining clips for the air intake cover at the firewall.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rubber sealing strip from the cover and then remove the retaining screws. Slide the cover out of the lower windshield trim strip and remove it.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the vacuum line from the heater valve.
  8.  
  9. Remove the heater cover retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Pull up the rubber sealing strip from the engine side of the defroster plenum (firewall), unscrew the retaining screws and pull up and out on the blower motor cover.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the cable straps on the connecting cable and then disconnect the plug.
  14.  
  15. Unscrew the mounting bolts and then remove the blower motor.
  16.  
  17. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
