Windshield Wiper Motor

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1974-76 230, 240D, 280, 280C and 300D Models



If only the motor is to be removed, DON'T loosen the adjusting nut on the linkage arm.

  1. Remove the cover underneath the left side of the instrument panel.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ball joint at the linkage connecting rod (it should pop right off).
  4.  
  5. Unscrew the three mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. From the engine compartment, pull off the cable on the wiper motor and then remove the motor.
  8.  
  9. Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Always use new sealing rings on the wiper motor mounting nuts.
  10.  

1977-78 230, 240D; 1977-83 280E, 280CE, 300D; 1977-84 300CD and 300TD Models

  1. Remove the wiper arms.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake grille on the right side.
  4.  
  5. Remove the covering cap and nut on the left and right side bearing shafts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four expanding rivets and then remove the left side air intake grille.
  8.  
  9. Remove the center air plenum cover (four expanding rivets and a Phillips screw).
  10.  
  11. Carefully pull the left and right side connecting rods off of the wiper motor crank.
  12.  
  13. Remove the water drain tube from the right side bearing shaft.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the coupler plug in the engine compartment. Unclip the plug from the firewall and pull it all the way through.
  16.  
  17. Unbolt the wiper motor and remove it toward the right side.
  18.  
  19. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  20.  

1978-80 280S, 280SE, 300SD, 450SE, 450SEL and 6.9 Models

  1. Remove the wiper arms.
  2.  
  3. Remove the covering caps and nuts on both wiper shafts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake grille.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the wiper motor plug under the left side of the instrument panel and then pull it into the engine compartment along with the rubber grommet in the firewall.
  10.  
  11. Pull off the linkage drive rod and then unscrew the crank on the wiper motor.
  12.  
  13. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the wiper motor.
  14.  
  15. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  16.  

Remove the rubber seal around the motor housing during installation or leave it off.

1981-84 300SD, 380SE, 380SEC, 380SEL, 500SEC and 500SEL Models

  1. Remove the wiper arms.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake cover. Unscrew the fastening screws and then disconnect the front plug connector.
  4.  
  5. Compress the mounting flange on the rear plug connector. Push the plug out of the firewall toward the front of the car, twist it and then insert it toward the rear of the car.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiper motor and linkage.
  8.  
  9. Unscrew the nut on the wiper motor shaft.
  10.  
  11. Swivel the wiper linkage and then unscrew the bolts for the wiper motor underneath.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wiper motor.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Mount the wiper motor in the base plate.
  2.  
  3. Push the crank arm on the wiper motor shaft and position the nut. Make sure that the lever on the right-hand wiper shaft is pointing down.
  4.  
  5. Align the crank arm so that the upper edge is parallel with the wiper motor shaft.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut on the wiper motor shaft.
  8.  
  9. Attach the wiper motor and linkage assembly to the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.
  12.  

190D and 190E Models

  1. Open the hood all the way and disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wiper arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the round cover from the wiper shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two clips, the rubber seal and the two screws and then remove the air intake cover.
  8.  
  9. Pull the three-piece air intake pan from the windshield and remove it.
  10.  
  11. Unscrew the wiper motor/linkage assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cover and unscrew the four mounting bolts for the fuse box. Pull the fuse box slightly forward and up and then unplug the wiper motor connection.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wiper motor/linkage assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the nut on the wiper motor shaft and then pull off the crank arm and linkage.
  18.  
  19. Unscrew and remove the wiper motor.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Attach the wiper motor to the base plate.
  2.  
  3. Press the crank arm onto the wiper motor shaft. Make sure that the crank arm and the pushrod are parallel.
  4.  
  5. Attach the crank arm to the wiper motor and then install the wiper motor/linkage assembly.
  6.  
  7. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.
