Mercury Cougar 2000-2002

Engine Identification

The engine identification code can be found on a label attached to the engine. On the 2.0L motor it is on the camshaft timing belt cover, and on the 2.5L engine it is located on the left valve cover. The label contains, among other information, the engine calibration number, the engine build date, the engine plant code, and the engine ID number.

Another important label is the emission calibration label, located on the on either the driver-s or passenger-s door or door jamb. This label identifies the engine calibration, engine code and revision numbers. These numbers are used to determine if parts are unique to specific engines.

It is imperative that the engine codes and calibration number be used when ordering parts or making inquiries about the engine.
