The ignition coil is located at the passenger-s side front of the engine next to the rocker arm cover on 1993-98 3.0L engine models. On 1999-00 3.3L engine models, the ignition coil is located inside of the distributor, and cannot be replaced separately.
Removal & Installation
The ignition coil is part of the distributor assembly, and must be replaced as a unit. Please refer to Distributor, Removal and Installation for the procedure.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Disconnect the two-wire ignition coil harness connector from the distributor electrical connector.
- Connect ohmmeter leads to pins 1 and 2 at the distributor electrical connector. The resistance should be 0.5-1 ohm. If the resistance is outside of specifications, replace the distributor. If it is within specifications, continue by testing the secondary winding resistance.
- Remove the distributor cap and position it aside.
Connect ohmmeter leads to distributor electrical connector pin 1 and the coil tower metal tip on the distributor. The resistance should be approximately 12,000 (12k) ohms. If it is not, replace the distributor.
