Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar bushing nuts.
    NOTE
    Left side shown right side similar.

  4.  
  5. Remove the two stabilizer bar nuts.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the two stabilizer bar nuts.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer bar bushing nuts.
  4.  
  5. Replace the wheel and tire assembly.

NOTE
Be sure that new stabilizer bar-to-stabilizer bar link nuts, stabilizer bar bracket-to-lower arm gusset nuts and bolts, and stabilizer bar link-to-control arm nuts are available. These parts lose their torque holding/retention capabilities during removal and must not be reused.

  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove both the left and right stabilizer bar-to-stabilizer bar link nuts and discard them.
  4.  
  5. Remove both the left and right stabilizer bar bracket-to-lower control arm gusset nuts and discard them.
  6.  
  7. Remove both the left and right stabilizer bar bracket-to-lower control arm gusset bolts and discard them.
  8.  
  9. Gently pry the ends of the stabilizer bar off the front stabilizer bar links and remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. If the front stabilizer bar link must be removed, hold the link shaft with a wrench and remove the link lower nut and discard it. Remove the link and the two insulators and washers.

To install:

  1. If the front stabilizer bar links were be removed, assemble the insulator and washers to the link. Install the link shaft in the lower control arm. While holding the link with a wrench, install a new nut and tighten it to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).

  3. Align the ends of the stabilizer bar with the links and gently push to bar into place.
  4.  
  5. Position the stabilizer bar mounting brackets on the lower control arm gusset studs, install the new nuts, and tighten them to 30-38 ft. lbs. (41-51 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the new front stabilizer bar-to-lower arm gusset bolts and tighten them to 30-38 ft. lbs. (41-51 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the new stabilizer bar-to-stabilizer bar link nuts and tighten them to 34-38 ft. lbs. (46-51 Nm) on 1993-98 vehicles. On 1999-00 vehicles, tighten the nuts to 46-51 ft. lbs. (62-70 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.

Stabilizer Links



Removal & Installation
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar link nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar link.
  6.  

To install:


NOTE
New fasteners for suspension components must be used when old fasteners are loosened or removed, or when suspension components are replaced.

  1. Replace the stabilizer bar link.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer bar link nuts.
  4.
