    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Check for trouble codes and make necessary repairs if needed.
    4.  
    5. Apply the parking brake and be sure that the vehicle is in PARK.
    6.  
    7. Start and run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
    8.  
    9. Run the engine at about 2000 rpm for 2 minutes under no-load.
    10.  
    11. Turn off all electrical loads.
    12.  
    13. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
    14.  
    15. Be sure the engine speed is 700-800 rpm.
    16.  
    17. Rev the engine 2 or 3 times to 2,000-3,000 rpm and return the engine to idle speed.

      Fig. Adjust the timing so the pointer on the engine indicates 15° before top dead center (3 notches from TDC) on the crankshaft pulley.

    19. Connect a timing light to the No. 1 cylinder spark plug wire at the distributor end and check the ignition timing. Be sure that the timing pointer is pointing to the 15° BTDC mark on the crankshaft pulley.
      NOTE
      Each notch on the crankshaft pulley represents 5°.

    21. If the timing is not within the specification, loosen the distributor mounting bolt and adjust the distributor until the timing is at the proper specification.

    23. Tighten the distributor mounting bolt to 10-12 ft. lbs., (14-17 Nm).

    25. Stop the engine and connect the TP sensor.

    While periodic adjustment is not necessary, ignition timing may need to be adjusted when the distributor has been removed for repairs, such as cylinder head removal, or when all other causes of an engine performance problem have been eliminated and the symptoms suggest an ignition timing problem.


    WARNING
    Timing should be adjusted using an inductive pickup timing light. Other types of timing lights alter circuit resistance and may damage electronic engine control components.

    When checking ignition timing, observe the following conditions:



    All lights and accessories must be turned off.
     
    The engine should be warmed up to normal operating temperature.
     
    The front wheels should be pointed straight ahead.
     
    Make sure that the radiator cooling fan has stopped before checking timing.
     
    The transmission must be in park (P) or neutral (N).

    1. Apply the parking brake and be sure that the vehicle is in park.
    2.  
    3. Start and run the engine at about 2000 rpm for about two minutes.
    4.  
    5. Turn the engine OFF and disconnect the throttle position sensor harness connector, located at the throttle body between the intake manifold and air cleaner-to-intake manifold hose.
    6.  
    7. Connect a tachometer, following the manufacturer-s instructions.
    8.  
    9. Connect the timing light, following the manufacturer-s instructions. The pickup should be connected to the #1 cylinder spark plug wire.
    10.  
    11. Start the engine and rev it two or three times to 2,000-3,000 rpm. Allow the engine to return to idle for a minute.
    12.  
    13. Check the engine idle speed. The idle speed should be 650-750 rpm. If not, determine the cause and make the necessary repairs or adjustments.
      CAUTION
      Keep away from moving engine parts such as the cooling fan and drive belts. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry while under the hood of the car with the engine running.

    15. Aim the timing light at the timing pointer, which is located at the center of the timing cover above the crankshaft pulley. The 15°BTDC notch on the crankshaft pulley should align with the timing pointer.

    17. If timing is incorrect, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and rotate the distributor to align the specified notch with the timing pointer. Rotate counterclockwise to advance timing or clockwise to retard.
    18.  
    19. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 10-12 ft. lbs. (14-17 Nm) and recheck the timing to ensure that the distributor did not move while tightening.
    20.  
    21. Turn the engine OFF . Disconnect the timing light and tachometer.
    22.  
    23. Reconnect the throttle position sensor harness connector.
