Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.

    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     
    Battery
     
    Transmission electrical connectors
     
    Speedometer cable
     
    Throttle Valve (TV) cable from the accelerator cable
     
    Shift select cable from the manual select cable joint and bracket
     
    Accelerator cable from the bracket on top of the transmission case
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector
     
    Shift solenoid electrical connectors
     
    Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch electrical connector
     
    Starter motor
     
    Fluid cooler hoses
     
    Upper rear transmission-to-bulkhead bolt
     
    2 upper transmission-to-engine bolts
     
    Negative battery cable from the transmission
     

  4.  
  5. Install an engine support fixture.

    Both front wheels
     
    Splash shields
     
    Control arms from the steering knuckles
     
    Both axle shafts
     
    Rear engine torque rod
     
    Flywheel cover
     
    Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts
     
    Muffler mounting bracket from the rear of the engine
     
    Rear engine mount bracket from the transmission
     

  6.  
  7. Properly support the transmission.

    Left transmission mount
     
    Remaining engine-to-transmission bolts
     
    Transmission
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Use grease to lubricate the cup around the center of the torque converter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the distance between the torque converter and the edge of the transaxle housing; it should be at least 0.85 in. (21.4mm). If the distance is less than specified, the torque converter is improperly installed. Remove and reinstall it.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission to the engine and torque the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Left transmission mount and bracket and torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Rear engine mount bracket to the transmission and torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Rear engine mount-to-bulkhead bolt and torque it to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Muffler mount to the rear exhaust hanger
     
    Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts and torque them to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Flywheel inspection cover and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Both driveshafts
     
    Rear engine torque rod assembly and torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Control arms to the steering knuckles and torque the bolts 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Splash shields
     
    Both front wheels
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the engine support fixture.

    Negative battery cable to the transmission and torque the bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
     
    Upper transmission-to-engine mounting bolts and torque them to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Through-bolt to the rear engine mount and torque it to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Starter motor and torque the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
     
    Inlet and outlet fluid cooler lines with new hose clamps
     
    Speedometer cable into the gear case
     
    VSS electrical connector
     
    Shift solenoid electrical connector
     
    PNP switch electrical connector
     
    Engine wire harness bracket to the rear of the transmission and torque the bolts 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     
    Accelerator and shift select cables into the bracket on top of the transmission
     
    Shift select cable end to the manual select cable joint and adjust as necessary
     
    TV cable to the accelerator cable
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the transmission with new oil.
  10.  
  11. Flush the oil cooler lines.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and verify the proper gear select range.
  14.  
  15. Check the fluid level and adjust, as needed.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Both battery cables
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch electrical connector
     
    Throttle Valve (TV) cable from the linkage and the bracket
     
    Shift select cable from the manual lever and the TV cable bracket guide
     
    Upper transmission to engine bolts
     
    Starter motor
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.

    Left transmission mounting bracket
     
    Both splash shields
     
    Cooler hoses from the pipes at the transmission
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Both axle shafts
     
    Front transmission mount
     
    Rear transmission mount
     
    Front crossmember
     

  8.  
  9. Support the transmission.

    Engine reinforcement brace and lower it
     
    Flywheel access cover
     
    Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts
     
    Lower transmission-to-engine bolts
     
    Transmission
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Before installing the transmission assembly, perform the following:
    1. Apply grease around the pilot shaft at the center of the torque converter.
    2.  
    3. Measure the distance between the outside edge of the torque converter housing and the torque converter lug. The distance should be more than 0.906 in. (23mm). If it is less than 0.906 in. (23mm), the torque converter is improperly installed. Remove and properly seat on the input shaft.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission and torque the two lower transmission-to-engine bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts and torque them to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Flywheel access cover
     
    Lower engine reinforcement brace and torque the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission support fixture.
    WARNING
    The differential portion of the 3-speed transmission is separated from the rest of the transmission and must be drained and refilled separately. The differential cannot be drained or refilled through the transmission drain plug or filler tube.



    Front suspension crossmember and torque the 10 front bolts to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm) and the two center bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm)
     
    Rear transmission mount and torque the bolts to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm)
     
    Front transmission mount and torque the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Both driveshafts
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Left transmission mounting bracket and torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm)
     
    Oil cooler hoses to the pipes and secure them with new clamps
     
    Both splash shields and torque the bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Starter motor and torque the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)

  7. On 3-speed transmission, refill the differential with 1 1 / 2 qts. (1.4 L) of DEXRON®III automatic transmission fluid, into the differential filler plug hole. The fluid level should be even with the bottom of the differential filler plug hole. Install the filler plug and tighten to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Left side transmission mounting bracket and torque the bolt to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm)
     
    Left transmission bracket reinforcement and torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Upper transmission-to-engine bolts and torque them to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    TV guide cable bracket onto the transmission and torque the bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Shift select cable into the bracket at the transaxle and secure with clip
     
    Shift select cable to the manual lever and torque the nut to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    VSS electrical connector
     
    TV cable to the throttle linkage and bracket
     

  10.  
  11. Adjust the TV cable as follows:
    1. Be sure the throttle valve is fully closed.
    2.  
    3. Measure the distance between the end of the outer cable boot and the end of the TV cable stopper, it should be 0-0.04 in. (0-1mm).
    4.  
    5. If the distance is greater than specified, loosen the TV cable locknut and tighten the adjust nut until within specification.
    6.  
    7. If the distance is less than specified, loosen the TV cable adjust nut. Torque the locknut to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    8.

  13. Install or connect the following:

    Ground cable and torque the bolt to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm)
     
    PNP electrical connector
     
    Air cleaner and torque the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    IAT electrical connector
     
    Battery
     
    Both battery cables
     

  14.  
  15. Fill the transmission with new oil.
  16.  
  17. Flush the oil cooler lines.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and verify the proper gear select range.
  20.  
  21. Check the fluid level and adjust, as needed.
