Ignition Coil

Removal & Installation



1.3L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Carefully release the number 1 spark plug wire from the clip on the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the number 1 spark plug wire from the number 1-4 ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the number 3 spark plug wire from the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 bolts from each ignition coil.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coils.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coils. Secure with the 2 bolts and tighten to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the number 1 spark plug wire to the number 1-4 ignition coil.
  4.  
  5. Install the number 3 spark plug wire to the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Carefully secure the number 1 spark plug wire in the clip on the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

1.8L Engine

NOTE
The ignition coil and the ignition control module are 1 unit and are serviceable by replacement only.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 clips and the 2 nuts that secure the engine cover to the cylinder head cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine cover from the cylinder head cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector from each ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt securing each ignition coil from the cylinder head cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove each ignition coil from the cylinder head cover.

To install:

  1. Install each ignition coil to the cylinder head cover.
  2.  
  3. Secure the ignition coils using the bolts and tighten to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect each ignition coil electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the engine cover to the cylinder head cover. Secure the engine cover with the 2 clips and the 2 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Testing



Using a Digital Multimeter (DMM), check the ignition coil resistance. Ignition coil resistance at the secondary winding should measure out at 8.5k-11.5k ohms at 20°C (68°F) for the 1.3L engine.
