Accessory Drive Belts

Adjustment

Adjust the drive belt tension to the following specifications: 6-8 mm (0.24-0.31 in) with 10 kg (22 lbs) of pressure on a used belt; 8-10 mm (0.30-0.40 in) with 10 kg (22 lbs) of pressure on a new belt.

The Prizm 1.8L engine is equipped with an automatic (spring-loaded) belt tensioner for the accessory drive belt. Adjustment of drive belt tension is not possible.

Belt Tension Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.
