Inspection



  1. Inspect the camshaft journals and the lobes for wear or for scoring.
  2.  
  3. Using outside micrometer J-26900-2, measure the height of the intake lobes and of the exhaust lobes.

  5. Standard camshaft intake lobe height is 36.171-36.331mm (1.4241-1.4303 in) and minimum camshaft intake lobe height is 36.071mm (1.4202 in). If any of the camshaft lobes do not meet the specifications, replace the camshaft.
  6.  
  7. Standard camshaft exhaust lobe height is 36.356-36.516mm (1.4314-1.4376 in) and minimum camshaft exhaust lobe height 36.256mm (1.4275 in). If any of the camshaft lobes do not meet the specifications, replace the camshaft.
  8.  
  9. Place the camshaft in two V-Blocks, and use dial indicator J-7872 in order to measure the runout of the camshaft. Camshaft runout maximum is 0.10mm (0.0039 in).

  10.  
  11. Inspect the cylinder head for scoring in the camshaft journals.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the camshaft journal caps for scoring.
  14.  
  15. Clean the cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Wash the cylinder head in solvent.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the cylinder head for cracks or for other signs of damage.
  20.  

Removal & Installation




NOTE
The procedure is the same for the exhaust camshaft and the intake camshaft.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing chain
     
    Camshaft sprocket
     
    Camshaft bearing cap bolts, in sequence, by starting at the ends and working towards the center of the camshaft
     
    Camshaft from the cylinder head

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft to the cylinder head
     
    Camshaft bearing caps in their proper location and direction and torque the bolts in sequence to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). Torque the front bearing cap bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Sprocket to the camshaft and torque the bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Timing chain
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check the valve clearance and adjust if necessary.
  4.  

1.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    The mating surface of the cylinder head and cover must not be damaged during this procedure. Place a clean shop cloth between the rod and mating surfaces and use care not to bump the rod when loosening.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Rocker arm cover
     
    Distributor and housing
     
    Timing belt
     
    Camshaft timing belt sprocket. Lock the camshaft with a 0.39 in. (10mm) rod inserted into the hole in the camshaft, before loosening the sprocket retaining bolt.

  5. Turn the crankshaft until the crankshaft sprocket timing mark is 60 degrees to the left of the arrow mark on the oil pump case.

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Camshaft caps from the cylinder head
     
    Camshaft
     
    Valve lifters
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Pour engine oil through the camshaft journal oil holes and check that engine oil comes out from the oil holes in the valve lifter bores.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve lifters in their original positions, if being re-used.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft in the cylinder head. After applying engine oil to the camshaft journal and all around the cam, position the camshaft so the camshaft timing sprocket pin hole in the camshaft is at the lower position.
  6.  
  7. Apply clean engine oil to the sliding surface of each bearing cap against the camshaft journal.
  8.  
  9. Apply silicone sealant to the mating surface of the No. 1 and No. 3 bearing cap, which will mate with the cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. There are marks provided on each camshaft bearing cap indicating the position and direction for installation. Install the bearing cap as indicated by the marks.
    NOTE
    Camshaft bearing cap No. 1 is installed first. It retains the camshaft in the proper position and thrust direction.

  12.  
  13. Apply clean engine oil to the retaining bolts and torque them to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).

  15. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft oil seal after applying engine oil to the seal lip
     
    Camshaft sprocket and torque the bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Valve cover using a new gasket and torque the bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Distributor housing
     
    Distributor
     
    Timing belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check the ignition timing. Adjust the timing as necessary.
    NOTE
    When the engine is started, if air is trapped in the Hydraulic Valve Lash (HVL) adjuster, the valve may make a tapping sound when the engine is operated. In such a case, run the engine at 2000 rpm until the air is purged and the tapping sound ceases.

1.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rocker arm cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Camshaft timing belt pulley
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and housing
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen all valve adjusting screws to allow the rocker arms to move freely.

    Camshaft housings
     
    Camshaft

To install:

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft, oil journals and the oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft
     
    Camshaft housings and torque the bolts in sequence to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    New camshaft oil seal
     
    Camshaft timing sprocket and torque the bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Timing belt
     

  4.  
  5. Perform the following steps to adjust the valve lash.
    1. Set the number one cylinder to top dead center.
    2.  
    3. Ensure the camshaft is in proper phase.
    4.  
    5. Adjust valves 1, 2, 8, and 6.
    6.  
    7. Rotate the crankshaft one revolution (360°).
    8.  
    9. Adjust valves 3, 4, 7, and 5.
    10.  

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    CMP sensor housing and torque the bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    CMP sensor
     
    Rocker arm cover and torque the bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
