Flywheel or Flexplate & Ring Gear

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle from the engine.
  4.  
  5. For manual transaxle equipped vehicles, remove the pressure plate assembly and the clutch disc.
  6.  
  7. Replace the flywheel if there are any cracks, other damage or signs of excessive wear on the ring gear or on the surface that contacts the clutch disc.
  8.  
  9. Mark the flywheel-to-engine position.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flywheel retaining bolts and the flywheel from the crankshaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clutch pilot bushing from the flywheel.
  14.  
  15. Clean all grease and dirt from the flywheel outer surfaces.
  16.  

To install:

  1. If equipped with manual transaxle, install the clutch pilot bushing into the flywheel.
  2.  
  3. Align the flywheel-to-engine marks. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the J-35271 Flywheel Holder to the cylinder block and the flywheel.
  6.  
  7. Apply GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent, to the flywheel retaining bolt threads.
  8.  
  9. Install the flywheel retaining bolts to the flywheel and tighten the retaining bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) for manual transaxle, or 69 ft. lbs. (95 Nm) for automatic transaxle.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with manual transaxle, install the pressure plate assembly and the clutch disc.
  12.  
  13. Remove the flywheel holder.
  14.  
  15. Install the transaxle to the engine.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle assembly.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with a manual transaxle, remove the clutch and pressure plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the eight flywheel retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
  10.  
  11. Clean any grease or dirt from the crankshaft flange outer surface using a suitable solvent.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Apply GM P/N 12345493, or the equivalent, to the flywheel retaining bolt threads (1).
  4.  
  5. If equipped with automatic transaxle, install the flywheel retaining bolts to the crankshaft and tighten the retaining bolts in sequence to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
  6.  
  7. If equipped with manual transaxle, install the flywheel retaining bolts to the crankshaft and tighten the retaining bolts in sequence to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). After the proper torque has been reached, use a J-36660-A and tighten the flywheel bolts an additional 90 degrees.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with manual transaxle, install the clutch and pressure plate.
  10.  
  11. Install the transaxle assembly.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
