Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission from the vehicle
     
    Pressure plate and clutch disc, for manual transmission
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the flywheel-to-engine position.

    Flywheel from the crankshaft
     
    Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
     
    Oil pan
     
    Rear crankshaft seal housing
     
    Rear crankshaft seal
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the inside and outside edges of the rear crankshaft seal.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rear crankshaft seal housing with a new seal and torque the bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    Oil pan and torque the bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    CKP sensor and torque the bolt to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Apply Loctite® sealant to the flywheel retaining bolt threads.

    Flywheel and torque the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Pressure plate and clutch disc, for manual transmission
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Check the oil level and top off if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Pressure plate and clutch disc, for manual transmission
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the flywheel-to-engine position.

    Flywheel from the crankshaft
     
    Rear crankshaft seal
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the lip of the new rear oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rear oil seal and tap it into place
     
    Flywheel and torque the bolts to 67 ft. lbs. (83 Nm)
     
    Pressure plate and clutch disc, for manual transmission
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Check the oil level and top off, if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  8.
