Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Cut the flange off of the front bushing.

    Control arm rear bushing from the control arm with Tool J 34865
     
    Control arm bracket
     
    Front bushing from the control arm with Tool J 34865
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the circumference of the bushings with soapy water to ease installation.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Center the bushing in the control arm and using tool J 34865 install the front bushing to the control arm
     
    Rear bushing to the control arm with tool J 34865
     
    Control arm bracket. Torque the nut to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
     
    Control arm
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  


NOTE
The lower control arm bushings are service as part of the control arm and cannot be serviced separately.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Stabilizer shaft link from the control arm
     
    Ball joint nut
     
    Ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Control arm front mounting bracket bolts
     
    Control arm rear mounting bracket bolts
     
    Control arm from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm to the vehicle
     
    Front and rear mounting brackets, do not tighten the bolts at this time
     
    Ball joint to the steering knuckle, do not tighten the nut at this time
     
    Stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Bounce the front end a few times to stabilize the suspension.
  4.  
  5. Torque the rear control arm bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Torque the front control arm bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Torque the ball joint nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Torque the stabilizer link nut to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Check and adjust the front end alignment, if needed.
  16.  

If removing the left side lower control arm from a vehicle with an automatic transmission, remove the crossmember, transmission support, both lower control arms and the front stabilizer bar as a complete unit.

  1. Install an engine support fixture.
  2.  
  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Suspension support brace
     
    Stabilizer shaft link, if equipped
     
    Mounting bolts (1-5) from the lower control arm
     
    Lower control arm from the vehicle

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm and hand-tighten the bolts
     
    Stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm and hand-tighten the nut, if equipped
     
    Lower control arm bracket and torque the nut to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Control to the steering knuckle and torque the fasteners to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm)

    Suspension support brace and torque the nuts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Bounce the front end several times to stabilize the suspension.
  4.  
  5. Torque the bolts in the following sequence:
    1. Bolt No. 3: 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolt No. 1: 158 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Bolt No. 5: 167 ft. lbs. (225 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Bolt No. 4: 109 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Bolt No. 2: 91 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Stabilizer shaft nut to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    12.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the engine support fixture and connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the front end alignment, if needed.
  10.
