Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two nuts, two washers, and the two cushions from the stabilizer links at the control arms.
  4.  
  5. Remove the four bolts, the two mounting brackets and the stabilizer shaft from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two nuts and the stabilizer shaft links from the stabilizer shaft.

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft. Secure the shaft with two nuts. Do not tighten fully.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer shaft bushings to the stabilizer shaft.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the stabilizer shaft bushings with super lube GM P/N 12346241 or equivalent.
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer shaft to the vehicle but do not tighten the bolts fully.
  8.  
  9. Secure the stabilizer shaft with two mounting brackets and four bolts. Make sure that the stabilizer shaft is centered.
  10.  
  11. Install two link cushions, two link washers, and two link nuts to the stabilizer shaft links at the control arms.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the stabilizer shaft mounting bracket bolts (3) to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the stabilizer shaft link nuts (5) to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the stabilizer shaft link-to-stabilizer shaft nuts to 38 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  

  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Apply paint to the stabilizer shaft in order to mark the location of the insulators on the stabilizer shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 nuts and 2 stabilizer shaft links from the stabilizer shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 nuts and the front suspension crossmember brace.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts, 2 studs and 2 stabilizer shaft insulator clamps from the stabilizer shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer shaft (10) from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 2 stabilizer shaft insulators from the stabilizer shaft.

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer shaft, 2 insulators, 2 insulator clamps, 2 nuts, 2 studs and 2 bolts. Tighten the 2 nuts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) and the 2 studs to 109 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the front crossmember brace and 2 nuts. Tighten the 2 nuts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer shaft link to the left side of the stabilizer shaft. Secure the link to the shaft with the nut. DO NOT tighten the nut.
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer shaft link to the left front control arm. Secure the link to the control arm with the nut. DO NOT tighten the nut.
  8.  
  9. Install the stabilizer shaft link to the right side of the stabilizer shaft. Secure the link to the shaft with the nut. DO NOT tighten the nut.
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer shaft link to the right front control arm. Secure the link to the control arm with the nut. DO NOT tighten the nut.
  12.  
  13. Install the front wheel and tire assembly.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle. The weight of the vehicle must be on the vehicle's tires.
  16.  
  17. Raise the vehicle on a drive-on lift or on an alignment rack.
  18.  
  19. Push down the front bumper 3 times in order to stabilize the suspension.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the 2 bolts that secure the clamp to the vehicle to 167 ft. lbs. (225 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Use a 5mm hex wrench in order to hold the upper left stabilizer shaft link stud. Tighten the nut that secures the stabilizer shaft to the link to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Use a 5mm hex wrench in order to hold the lower left stabilizer shaft link stud. Tighten the nut that secures the link to the front control arm to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Use a 5mm hex wrench in order to hold the upper right stabilizer shaft link stud. Tighten the nut that secures the stabilizer shaft to the link to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Use a 5mm hex wrench in order to hold the lower right stabilizer shaft link stud. Tighten the nut that secures the link to the front control arm to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
