Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



The wheel bearings are sealed units and cannot be adjusted.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Brake caliper bracket
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Drive axle nut
     
    Hub/bearing from the steering knuckle using a slide hammer
     
    Inner bearing race using a press
     

  4.  
  5. Inspect the wheel bearings for excessive wear, corrosion or contamination by dirt or water; replace as necessary.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Inner bearing race using a press
     
    Hub/bearing to the steering knuckle using a piece of wood and a hammer
     
    Drive axle nut and torque it to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm)
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper bracket and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Brake caliper and torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, if necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS), if equipped
     
    Brake hose from the strut
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Brake caliper bracket
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Steering knuckle and clamp it in a soft face vise
     
    Inner seal shield from the knuckle
     
    Inner oil seal from the knuckle
     
    Wheel bearing retainer from the knuckle
     
    Hub and brake shield from the knuckle
     
    Outer seal
     

  4.  
  5. Press the front wheel bearing outside inner race from the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel bearing.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Remove the inner and outer races from the new bearing.
  2.  
  3. Press a new bearing into the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    New races into the bearing
     
    Drive the outer seal into the steering knuckle with a Hub Seal Installer tool
     
    Brake shield to the knuckle and torque the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Press the hub into the knuckle
     
    Front wheel bearing retainer to the knuckle
     
    Inner seal to the knuckle
     

  6.  
  7. If equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), align the holes for the speed sensor in the inner shield and the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Inner seal shield to the knuckle
     
    Steering knuckle to the vehicle
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper bracket and torque the bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     
    Brake caliper and torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Brake hose to the strut and torque the bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
     
    WSS, if equipped and torque the bolt to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
