  18.
  19. Remove the tripod joint from the wheel drive shaft.
    NOTE
Do not wash the Tri-Pot joint spider in solvent or degreaser. Washing the Tri-Pot joint spider in solvent or degreaser will remove all of the lubrication in the spider's needle bearings. Use only a clean, dry, solvent-free rag to clean the Tri-Pot spider assembly.

  20.
  21. Clean the tripod joint with a clean, dry, solvent free cloth. Inspect the tripod joint for excessive wear or damage. If any excessive wear, damage, or abnormality is found, replace the tripod joint as an assembly.
  22.
  23. Remove the inner boot from the wheel drive shaft.
    NOTE
Do not clean the wheel drive shaft boot(s) in solvent. Cleaning the wheel drive shaft boot(s) in degreaser or other solvents can cause the boot(s) to deteriorate. Use only a clean, dry, solvent-free cloth to clean the wheel drive shaft boot(s).

  24.
  25. Clean the inner boot with a clean, dry, solvent free cloth. Inspect the inner boot for tears, damage or fatigue. Replace as necessary.
  26.
  27. Inspect the dynamic dampener on the right wheel drive shaft for damage or distortion. Replace as necessary.
  28.
  29. Remove the inner joint housing seal using the Bearing Puller Tool J-22912-01 and a press.
  30.

To install:

  1. Install the inner joint seal using a press.

Fig. The damper centerline should be 16.980 inch (431mm), plus or minus 0.118 inch (3mm) from the outer joint-inner joint, Prizm

  2.
  3. If the damper was removed, install the damper to the wheel drive shaft before installing the inner joint.
  4.
  5. Install the damper assembly on the right side wheel drive shaft only, to the wheel drive shaft. The damper should be located on the groove on the wheel drive shaft. The damper centerline should be 16.980 inch (431mm), plus or minus 0.118 inch (3mm) from the outer joint.
  6.
  7. Crimp the damper clamp.
  8.
  9. Install the inner joint housing boot and clamps to the wheel drive shaft. Do not crimp the clamps at this time.
  10.
  11. Align the index marks on the tripod joint and the wheel drive shaft.
    NOTE
Place the side of the tripod joint with the beveled splines (1) away from the transaxle.

  12.
  13. Install the tripod joint onto the wheel drive shaft.
  14.
  15. Install the snap ring.
  16.
  17. Pack the inner joint housing with 5.8-6.4 oz. (165-185 grams) of grease supplied with inner joint boot kit.
  18.
  19. Align the index marks on the inner joint housing and the tripod joint.
  20.
  21. Install the inner joint housing to the tripod joint.
  22.
  23. Install the inner joint boot and clamps to the inner joint housing.
  24.
  25. Measure the wheel drive shaft length to ensure that the boots are not stretched or excessively contracted when the wheel drive shaft is at standard length.
  26.
  27. The right wheel drive shaft standard length is 33.756 inch (857.4mm), plus or minus 0.197 inch (5mm).

    NOTE
Use the Seal Clamp Tool J-35566 to draw the closing hooks of the clamp together, so that the clamp locks into position.

  30.
  31. Crimp the clamps using the Seal Clamp Tool J-35566.
  32.

  7. Slide the outer joint boot towards the center of the wheel drive shaft.
    NOTE
When servicing the wheel drive shaft(s), place reference marks on all components to ensure that all components are reassembled in the correct position. If the components are not reassembled in the correct position, premature wear of the joint and/or excessive driveline vibrations may occur.

  8.
  9. Place index marks on the outer joint and the wheel drive shaft.
    NOTE
Do not disassemble the outer joint. If any abnormality is found in the joint, or in the joint components, replace the joint as an assembly.

  10.
  11. Remove the outer joint from the wheel drive shaft by expanding the snap ring and pulling outward on the joint.
    NOTE
When servicing the hub assembly, be careful not to damage the ABS components. If any of the ABS components are damaged, the ABS system may not function properly and the damaged component will need to be replaced.

  12.
  13. Mount the wheel drive shaft in a soft jaw vise.
  14.
  15. Remove the outer joint seal.
  16.
  17. Clean the outer boot with a clean, dry, solvent free cloth.
