Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    On 4-door sedan, the right side halfshaft is stabilized by a center support bearing between the transmission and the inner Tri-pod joint. It is not necessary to remove the right inner drive axle and center support bearing assembly. The right side halfshaft assembly can be separated from the center support bearing by lightly tapping with a plastic mallet.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor from the steering knuckle, if equipped
     
    Unstake and remove the halfshaft nut
     
    Ball joint from the steering knuckle

  7. Using a suitable pry tool, pry on the inboard joints of the halfshaft to detach the snapring lock.
    NOTE
    On 4-door sedans, separate the right side halfshaft assembly from the center support bearing by tapping lightly with a plastic mallet.

To install:

  1. Inspect the CV-joint boots for tears or deterioration and replace, if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft into the steering knuckle
     
    Halfshaft into the transmission, or intermediate shaft
     
    Control arm to the steering knuckle and torque the ball stud bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Halfshaft nut and washer and torque the fastener to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm) and stake the nut
     
    ABS speed sensor to the steering knuckle and torque the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission with clean fluid.
  6.  
  7. Road test the vehicle.
  8.  


WARNING
Care must be exercised to prevent the differential-side CV-joint from being over-extended. Over-extension of the CV-joint could result in separation of internal components and possible joint failure. If the vehicle is to be lowered and moved, the front wheel bearings must be supported using a 9 / 16 in. bolt, 1 3 / 4 in. washer, 2 in. washer and a 9 / 16 in. nut, assembled through the shaft opening in the hub. Tighten the nut and bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). If equipped with Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS), use caution not to damage the ABS speed sensor ring on the wheel-side CV-joint. DO NOT pry against the ring with metal tools. If the serrations on the speed sensor ring appear damaged, replace the wheel-side CV-joint.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Splash shield
     
    Antilock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Cotter pin and lock cap from the halfshaft
     
    Halfshaft nut
     
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle
     
    Ball joint from the control arm
     
    Outer CV-joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Inner CV-joint from the transmission by gently prying the joint out

  4.  

To install:

  1. Inspect the CV-joint boots for tears or deterioration. Replace as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the front wheel bearing inner and outer oil seals for damage or deterioration. Replace as necessary.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the halfshaft fluid seal at the transmission for leakage or damage. Replace as necessary.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Inner CV-joint into the transmission
     
    Outer CV-joint into the steering knuckle
     
    Ball joint to the control arm and torque the bolts to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    New cotter pin to the tie rod end
     
    Halfshaft nut and torque it to 166 ft. lbs. (225 Nm)
     
    Lock cap onto the halfshaft and secure with a new cotter pin
     
    ABS speed sensor and torque the bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Splash shield and torque the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as needed.
  10.
