Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Properly drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Heater hoses from the heater core tubes at the firewall
     
    Temperature and mode control cables from the heater housing
     
    Air duct from the heater housing to the blower motor assembly (on models not equipped with A/C); otherwise, detach the heater housing from the evaporator assembly
     
    2 bolts and nuts and remove the heater case assembly
     
    Heater case halves
     
    Heater core from the heater case assembly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core into the heater case assembly
     
    Assemble the heater case assembly
     
    Heater assembly and install the 2 bolts and nuts
     
    Heater case assembly to the evaporator case assembly, if equipped with A/C
     
    Mode control and the temperature cables to the heater housing
     
    Heater hoses to the heater core
     

  2.  
  3. Install the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check for leaks and the heater operation.
  10.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater hoses from the heater core.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument panel by removing or disconnecting the following:
    NOTE
    The defroster nozzle has a boss on the reverse side for clamping onto the clip on the body side. When removing, pull upward at an angle.



    Steering wheel-disarm air bag system if equipped
     
    Right and left front pillar garnish trim
     
    Floor console bin
     
    Engine hood release lever
     
    Lower finish No. 1 trim panel
     
    Steering column cover
     
    Center cluster finish panel
     
    Cluster finish panel
     
    Radio
     
    Stereo opening cover or center differential control switch if so equipped
     
    Combination meter assembly
     
    Lower finish No. 2 panel with glove compartment door
     
    Heater control assembly
     
    Lower center finish panel
     



    No. 1 and No. 2 side defroster nozzles
     
    Safety pad assembly from the vehicle
     
    Instrument panel reinforcement
     
    Blower motor electrical connector and resistor electrical connector
     
    Air conditioning compressor control module electrical connector, if equipped
     
    Cruise control servo
     
    Refrigerant lines from the evaporator core; then, plug the openings to prevent contamination
     
    Ventilation ducts from the heater/air conditioning housing
     
    6 heater/air conditioning housing assembly-to-chassis nuts and the assembly
     
    Heater core-to-heater/air conditioning housing clamp screws and the clamps

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core
     
    Heater core-to-heater/air conditioning housing clamps and the clamp screws
     
    Heater/air conditioning housing assembly and the 6 assembly-to-chassis nuts
     
    Ventilation ducts to the heater/air conditioning housing
     
    Refrigerant lines to the evaporator core
     
    Cruise control servo, if equipped
     
    Air conditioning compressor control module electrical connector
     
    Blower motor electrical connector and resistor electrical connector
     
    Instrument panel reinforcement
     
    Safety pad assembly in the vehicle
     
    No. 1 and No. 2 side defroster nozzles
     
    Lower center finish panel
     
    Heater control assembly
     
    Lower finish No. 2 panel with glove compartment door
     
    Combination meter assembly
     
    Stereo opening cover or center differential control switch if so equipped
     
    Radio
     
    Cluster finish panel
     
    Center cluster finish panel
     
    Steering column covers
     
    No. 1 lower finish panel
     
    Engine hood release lever
     
    Floor console box
     
    Right and left front pillar garnish trim
     
    Steering wheel
     
    Heater hoses to the heater core
     

  2.  
  3. Evacuate, charge and leak test the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
