Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Forward section of driver-s side carpet
     
    Steering shaft joint cover
     
    Loosen the steering shaft upper joint bolt but do not remove
     
    Steering shaft lower joint bolt
     
    Lower joint from the pinion
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Tie rod ends from the steering knuckles
     
    Exhaust pipe
     
    Inlet and outlet pipes
     
    Steering gear mounting bolts and brackets
     
    Steering gear from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear through the front wheel opening
     
    Steering gear mounting brackets and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Inlet and outlet pipes and torque the fittings to 28.5 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), if removed
     
    Exhaust pipe and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), if removed
     
    Right and left tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and torque the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
     
    New cotter pins
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Steering shaft to the steering gear and torque the upper and lower steering shaft joint bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Steering shaft joint cover
     
    Driver-s side floor carpet
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. The front wheels must be straight and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Steering column upper cover
     
    Steering shaft lower coupling
     
    Outlet pipe heat shield
     
    Inlet and outlet pipes from the steering gear
     
    Heated Oxygen (HO 2 S) sensor
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.

    Both splash shields
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Exhaust manifold heat shield
     
    Outer tie rods
     
    Front crossmember brace
     
    Front suspension crossmember
     
    Rear transmission mount and bracket
     
    Exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold
     
    Steering gear boot heat shield
     
    Steering gear mounting clamps
     
    Steering gear
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear
     
    Steering gear clamps and torque the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm)
     
    Steering gear boot heat shield and torque the bolt to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Exhaust manifold pipe and torque the bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)
     
    Rear transmission mount bracket and torque the bolts to 57 ft. lbs. (77 Nm)
     
    Rear transmission mount and torque the bolt to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm)
     
    Front suspension crossmember and torque the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Front crossmember brace and torque the bolts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm)
     
    Outer tie rods and torque the nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     
    Exhaust manifold heat shield and torque the fasteners to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Both splash shields and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    HO 2 S sensor and torque the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Inlet and outlet pipes and torque the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm)
     
    Inlet and outlet clips and torque the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Outlet pipe heat shield and torque the bolt to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Steering shaft lower coupling and torque the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    Steering column upper cover and torque the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Refill and bleed the power steering system.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the front end alignment as needed.
