  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

Slide the driver's seat back, pull off the front part of the floor carpet on the driver's side and remove the steering shaft joint cover

Loosen the steering shaft upper joint bolt but do not remove

Steering shaft lower joint bolt and disconnect the lower joint from the pinion

    Both front wheels

    Tie rod ends

    Exhaust pipe at the manifold

Separate the shift linkage and extension rod from the transmission, for manual transmission

Engine rear torque rod with the bracket from the transmission, for automatic transmission

Power steering lines from the rack and pinion assembly and plug the openings to prevent system contamination

Rack and pinion from the vehicle

  4.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

Steering rack, brackets and mounting bolts to the bulkhead. When aligned properly, torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

Power steering lines to the rack and pinion. Torque the inlet and outlet fluid lines to 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) and the remaining lines to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

Shift linkage and extension rod to the manual transmission

Engine rear torque rod and bracket to the automatic transmission

Front exhaust pipe to the manifold using a new seal and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)

Tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and torque the castle nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)

    New cotter pins

    Both front wheels

Lower steering shaft-to-steering gear and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

Upper steering shaft and torque the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

    Steering joint cover

    Negative battery cable

  2.
  3. Place the driver's side floor carpet back into the original position.
  4.
  5. Bleed the steering system and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  6.
  7. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
  8.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.
  3. The front wheels must be straight and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  4.
