Strut (MacPherson Strut)

Disassembly & Assembly



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Strut
     

  4.  
  5. Mount a strut compressor tool into a holding fixture and install the strut using an adapter.
  6.  
  7. Compress the coil spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Strut rod piston nut and carefully release the compressed spring
     
    Strut from the compressor tool
     
    Strut cap, nuts, insulator and coil spring

To install:

  1. Install coil spring, insulator nuts and strut cap.
  2.  
  3. Mount the strut into a compressor tool and compress the coil spring.
    CAUTION
    Do not over compress the spring. Excess overloading may result in tool failure and could result in bodily injury.

  4.  
  5. Install the strut rod piston nut and torque it to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Release the coil spring and remove the compressor tool.
  8.  
  9. Install the strut.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear wheel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Open the lift gate or trunk lid and reposition the trim cover from the strut tower.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel and properly support the rear suspension
     
    Strut from the knuckle
     
    Upper strut nuts
     
    Compress the strut and separate it from the steering knuckle
     
    Strut from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Compress the strut.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Strut to the steering knuckle and position the alignment projection inside the opening in the knuckle
     
    Upper mounting nuts and torque them to 24 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Strut-to-steering knuckle bolts and torque them to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Reposition the rear trim cover.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear suspension.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear seat cushions
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) harness from the strut, if equipped
     
    Brake hose from the strut
     
    Stabilizer shaft joint from the strut, if equipped
     
    Cap from the strut support
     
    Upper strut mounting fasteners
     
    Strut from the suspension knuckle
     
    Strut from the vehicle

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut to the rear knuckle and hand-tighten the nuts at this time
     
    Strut to the support and torque the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the knuckle bolts to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm)
     
    Cap to the strut support
     
    Stabilizer shaft joint, if equipped and torque the fastener to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    WSS wire harness to the strut, if equipped
     
    Brake hose with a new clip
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Rear seat cushions
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill and bleed the brake system.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the rear wheel alignment as needed.
  6.
