Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



The wheel bearings are sealed units and cannot be adjusted.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    It is necessary to move the bearing spacer from side-to-side to work the punch around the perimeter of the inner bearing.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Spindle nut dust cap
     
    Unstake the spindle nut and washer
     
    If not equipped with a wheel hub, tap on the brake drum/hub assembly to loosen and remove the assembly from the spindle
     
    Inner bearing from the outboard side of the assembly, using a hammer and punch
     



    Outer bearing from the inboard side of the assembly, using a hammer and punch
     

  4.  

To install:


NOTE
The outer bearing is smaller in diameter than the inner one.

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure the bearing spacer is properly installed. The assembly will not fit on the spindle if the spacer lip is toward the inner bearing.



    Outer bearing in the drum/hub assembly using a Bearing Installation Tool J-34842 and driver handle J-7079-2
     
    Bearing spacer in the brake drum hub with the inner lip toward the outer bearing
     



    Install the inner bearing in the drum/hub assembly using a Bearing Installation Tool J-34842 and driver handle J-7079-2
     
    Brake drum/hub assembly to the spindle
     
    Washer and a new spindle nut and torque the nut to 120 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) if equipped with a wheel hub or to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) without a wheel hub
     
    Stake the spindle nut and install the dust cap
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS), if equipped
     
    Axle hub mounting bolts
     
    Axle hub
     
    O-ring from the backing plate
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring onto the backing plate
     
    Hub to the knuckle and torque the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     
    WSS, if equipped and torque the bolt to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Negative Battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check the rear wheel alignment and adjust, if necessary.
  4.
