Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Ensure that the front tires are in the straight-ahead position.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut that retains the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  10.  
  11. Use paint in order to mark the alignment of the steering wheel to the steering shaft. During installation, use these marks as a guide.
  12.  
  13. Install a steering wheel puller tool to the steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Ensure that the front tires are in the straight-ahead position.
  2.  
  3. If necessary, center the SIR coil.
  4.  
  5. If you are replacing the steering wheel, copy the alignment mark from the old steering wheel to the new steering wheel. When installing the steering wheel, ensure that the 2 tabs on the SIR coil align with the 2 slots on the steering wheel mounting surface. Failure to align the tabs may cause incorrect alignment of some components during installation. This may damage the SIR coil.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Fit the 2 tabs on the SIR coil into the 2 slots on the steering wheel mounting surface. Align the mark on the steering wheel (1) with the mark on the steering shaft (2).
  8.  
  9. Ensure that the steering wheel and the front tires are in the straight-ahead position.
  10.  
  11. Install the nut in order to retain the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Tighten the nut to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module
  14.  
  15. Enable the SIR system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  6.  
  7. Ensure the steering column is in the lock position.
  8.  
  9. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the horn electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. If the vehicle is equipped with cruise control, disconnect the cruise control electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut.
  16.  
  17. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and on the main shaft.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering wheel using a steering wheel puller tool.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering wheel to the column aligning the matchmarks.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel retaining nut and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the horn electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. If the vehicle is equipped with cruise control, install the cruise control electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  10.  
  11. Ensure the steering wheel is centered.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.
