Removal & Installation



1.6L Engine

Specific to:

Mazda Miata 1990-1993

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft pulley, timing belt cover, belt and the crankshaft sprocket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the A/C compressor and secure it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached. Remove the compressor mounting bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pickup tube and discard the gasket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump body attaching bolts and remove the oil pump body.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front crankshaft seal from the oil pump if the pump is being replaced.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces. Replace the O-rings on the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0-0.02 inch (0-0.5 mm), into the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump rotors into the pump body with the rotor marks aligned with each other.
  6.  
  7. Apply a bead of silicone to the oil pump body-to-cylinder block contact surface, going inside the bolt holes.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pump body and tighten the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install a new gasket and the oil pump pickup tube. Tighten the mounting bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Install the A/C compressor bracket and tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm). Install the A/C compressor and tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the crankshaft sprocket, timing belt assembly and cover.
  18.  
  19. Install the crankshaft pulley
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Fill the engine with the proper type and quantity of oil. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  24.  

1.8L Engine

Specific to:

Mazda Miata 1994-1997

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    A/C compressor and move it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    A/C compressor mounting bracket
     
    Alternator
     
    Oil pump bolts and the oil pump
     
    Front crankshaft seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0-0.02 inch (0-0.5mm) into the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Apply a bead of silicone to the oil pump body-to-cylinder block contact surface, going inside the bolt holes.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
     
    Air conditioning compressor bracket
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  12.
