Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters 2

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt cover and timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
  8.  
  9. Remove the center cover, breather and PCV hoses, and spark plug cables.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker cover, semi-circular packing, throttle body stay, both camshaft sprockets, and oil seals.
  12.  
  13. Remove the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and adapter.
  14.  
  15. Remove the intake and exhaust camshafts.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshafts with clean engine oil and position the camshafts on the cylinder head.
    NOTE
    The intake camshaft has a J stamped on the hexagon and the exhaust camshaft has a K or N.

  2.  
  3. Be sure the dowel pins on both camshaft sprocket ends are positioned properly.
  4.  
  5. Install the bearing caps. Tighten the caps gradually and in 2 or 3 steps. Caps 2, 3 and 4 have a front mark. Install with the mark aligned with the front mark on the cylinder head. Intake caps have I stamped on the cap and exhaust caps have E . Torque the front and rear retaining cap bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and tighten the center retaining cap bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Apply a coating of engine oil to the oil seals and install.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt, valve cover and all related parts. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery negative cable
     
    Timing belt cover and timing belt
     
    Center cover, breather and PCV hoses, and spark plug cables
     
    Rocker cover, semi-circular packing, throttle body stay, both camshaft sprockets, and oil seals
     
    CMP sensor and adapter
     
    Intake and exhaust camshafts
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshafts with clean engine oil and position the camshafts on the cylinder head.
    NOTE
    The intake camshaft has a J stamped on the hexagon and the exhaust camshaft has a K or N.

  2.  
  3. Be sure the dowel pins on both camshaft sprocket ends are positioned properly.
  4.  
  5. Install the bearing caps. Tighten the caps gradually and in 2 or 3 steps. Caps 2, 3 and 4 have a front mark. Install with the mark aligned with the front mark on the cylinder head. Intake caps have I stamped on the cap and exhaust caps have E . Torque the front and rear retaining cap bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and tighten the center retaining cap bolts to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Apply a coating of engine oil to the oil seals and install.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt, valve cover and all related parts. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.
  12.  

2.0L Engine
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Ignition coil
     
    Breather hose
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose
     
    Rocker arm (valve) cover and gasket
     
    Spark plug guide
     
    Timing belt front upper cover
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft sprocket, as follows:
    1. Secure the cam sprocket and timing belt with wire ties to prevent them from slipping out of place.
    2.  
    3. While holding the sprocket from turning with special tools MB990767 and MD998719, remove the camshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intake and exhaust rocker arm and shaft assemblies. Loosen both rocker arm assemblies gradually and evenly and remove the rocker shafts from the vehicle. Do NOT disassemble!
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector
     
    CMP sensor support
     
    CMP sensor sensing cylinder
     
    Camshaft

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft
     
    CMP sensor sensing cylinder, support and connector
     
    Rocker arm and shaft assemblies
     
    Camshaft oil seal
     
    Camshaft sprocket. Tighten the bolt to 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-98 Nm).
     
    Timing belt front upper cover
     
    Spark plug guide
     
    Rocker arm cover, with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts to 23-31 inch lbs. (2.5-3.5 Nm).
     
    Accelerator cable clamp
     
    PCV and breather hoses
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

2.0L Non-Turbo Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition coil pack.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the PCV hose and the breather hose from the cylinder head cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the semi-circular packing from the rear of the head.
  8.  
  9. Remove the camshaft position sensor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt.
  12.  
  13. Use tool MB990767 and MB998719 or equivalent to hold the camshaft sprockets and remove the sprocket mounting bolt and the sprocket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bracket and the rear timing belt cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the outside camshaft bearing cap.
  18.  
  19. Gradually loosen the camshaft bearing caps in sequence, one camshaft at a time and remove the bearing caps.
    NOTE
    Keep the bearing caps in order. They must be installed in the location that they were removed from.

  21. Mark the camshafts for later identification and remove the camshafts. The camshafts are not interchangeable.

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil or assembly lube to the camshaft and install the camshafts.
  2.  
  3. Install the bearing caps. Torque the bolts evenly and in sequence.

  5. Apply Loctite 518® to the outside camshaft bearing caps and install them.
  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft oil seal.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear timing belt cover and the bracket.
  10.  
  11. Use the special tools and install the camshaft sprockets.
  12.  
  13. Install the timing belt.
  14.  
  15. Apply Loctite 5699® or equivalent to the semi-circular packing and install it in the rear of the cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Install the camshaft position sensor.
  18.  
  19. Install the cylinder head cover. Torque the bolts in the proper sequence, evenly as follows:
    1. Step 1: 3.3 ft. lbs. (4.5 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 6.6 ft. lbs. (9.0 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Step 3: 8.9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).

  21. Install the air, breather and PCV hoses.
  22.  
  23. Install the coil pack.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
  26.  

2.0L Turbo Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body and remove the cable bracket from the intake plenum.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine center cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the spark plug cables from the spark plugs. Label them if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the breather hose and the PCV hose from the rocker cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker cover.
  12.  
  13. Position the No. 1 cylinder at TDC on compression.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt.
  16.  
  17. Use a wrench on the hex shaped part of the camshaft to hold the cam and remove the camshaft sprockets.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the bearing cap bolts in two or three steps and remove the bearing caps. If the bearing caps are hard to remove, tap the rear of the camshaft with a plastic hammer.

  21. Remove the camshaft(s) and the oil seals.

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil or assembly lube to the camshafts and install them on the cylinder head.
    WARNING
    If new camshaft(s) are being installed, remove the rocker arms and install the camshaft(s) and the bearing caps. Make sure the camshaft(s) can be turned by hand. After checking, remove the camshafts and install the rocker arms.


    NOTE
    Bearing caps and rocker arms must be installed in the same location that they were removed..

  3. Install the bearing caps and torque the bolts evenly in two or three steps to specifications.
  4.  
  5. Apply engine oil to the lip of the seal. Using MB998713, install the front oil seal.
  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft sprockets.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt.
  10.  
  11. Apply sealant to the semi-circular packing and install it in the cylinder head.
  12.  
  13. Apply sealant to the lower part of the front and rear bearing caps where they meet the cylinder head. Use a new gasket and install the rocker cover.
  14.  
  15. Connect the PCV hose and the breather hose.
  16.  
  17. Connect the spark plug wires.
  18.  
  19. Install the center cover.
  20.  
  21. Install and adjust the accelerator cable.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect and remove the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accelerator cable bracket and position the cable aside.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the breather hose and disconnect the PCV hose.
  8.  
  9. Label and disconnect the spark plug cables.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker cover.
  12.  
  13. Install lash adjuster retainer tools MD998443 or equivalent, to the rocker arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt assembly.
  16.  
  17. While holding camshaft stationary, with an appropriate spanner wrench, remove the camshaft sprocket retainer bolt. Remove the sprocket from the shaft.
  18.  
  19. Remove the camshaft oil seal.
  20.  
  21. Remove both rocker arm shaft assemblies from the head. Do not disassembly rocker arms and rocker arm shaft assemblies.
  22.  
  23. Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head.
  24.  
  25. Inspect the bearing journals on the camshaft, cylinder head, and bearing caps.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshaft journals and camshaft with clean engine oil and install the camshaft in the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm and shaft assemblies. Tighten the rocker arm shaft retainer bolts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (29-35 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Apply a coating of engine oil to the oil seal. Using the proper size driver, press-fit the seal into the cylinder head.

  7. Install the camshaft sprocket and retainer bolt and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt and belt covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lash adjuster retaining tools.
  12.  
  13. Install the rocker cover using new gasket material on mating surfaces.
  14.  
  15. Connect the spark plug cables.
  16.  
  17. Reinstall the air intake hose.
  18.  
  19. Install the breather hose and connect the PCV hose.
  20.  
  21. Install the battery.
  22.  
  23. Run the engine at idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Check idle speed and ignition timing; adjust as required.
  24.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Remove the battery
     
    Accelerator cable bracket and position the cable aside
     
    Air intake hose
     
    Breather hose and disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose
     
    Spark plug cables
     
    Rocker cover
     

  2.  
  3. Install lash adjuster retainer tools to the rocker arm.

    Timing belt covers and the timing belt
     
    Camshaft sprocket retainer bolt and remove the sprocket from the shaft
     
    Camshaft oil seal
     
    Both rocker arm shaft assemblies from the head
     
    Camshaft from the cylinder head
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshaft journals and camshaft with clean engine oil and install the camshaft in the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm and shaft assemblies. Tighten the rocker arm shaft retainer bolts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (29-35 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Apply a coating of engine oil to the oil seal. Using the proper size driver, press-fit the seal into the cylinder head.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft sprocket and retainer bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Timing belt and belt covers
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the lash adjuster retaining tools.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker cover using new gasket material on mating surfaces
     
    Spark plug cables
     
    Air intake hose
     
    Breather hose and connect the PCV hose
     
    Battery
     

  12.  
  13. Run the engine at idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Check idle speed and ignition timing; adjust as required.
  14.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing belt.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil connector, spark plug cable, PCV hose and breather hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil. Disconnect the control harness connection.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm cover retaining bolts. Remove the rocker arm cover. Discard the gasket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft position sensor support and camshaft position sensing cylinder.
  12.  
  13. Use tool MB990767 to hold the camshaft sprocket in place. Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. Remove the camshaft sprocket. Remove the spark plug guide oil seal.
  14.  
  15. Remove the intake rocker arm assembly. Remove the exhaust rocker arm assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft from its mounting on the engine.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshaft with clean engine oil. Install the camshaft on its mounting.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the battery. Remove the ignition coils.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the control wiring harness connection. Remove the rocker cover PCV connection.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker cover breather hose connection. Remove the engine oil control valve and O-ring. Remove the oil pressure switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plug guide oil seals. Remove the accumulator assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the connector bracket. Remove the camshaft position sensor support and camshaft position sensing cylinder.
  14.  
  15. Use tool MB998719 to hold the camshaft sprocket in place. Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. Remove the camshaft sprocket. Remove the oil seal.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rocker cover retaining bolts. Remove the rocker cover. Discard the gasket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the exhaust rocker arm shaft caps. Remove the exhaust rocker arm shaft assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the intake rocker arm shaft caps. Remove the intake rocker arm shaft assembly.
  22.  
  23. Raise the transaxle until the camshaft and transaxle mounting side bracket does not touch it.
  24.  
  25. Remove the camshaft from its mounting on the engine.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshaft with clean engine oil. Install the camshaft. Set the dowel pin of the camshaft in the position as shown in the illustration.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the valves.
  8.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Intake manifold plenum stay bracket
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor
     
    Valve covers and the timing belt
     

  2.  
  3. Using a camshaft sprocket holding tool, hold the sprocket and loosen the bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt and note the positioning of the knock pin at the end of the camshaft and remove the sprocket.
  6.  
  7. Install auto lash adjuster retainer tools on the rocker arms.
    NOTE
    Be sure to note the position of the rocker arms, rocker shafts and bearing caps for reinstallation purposes.

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Camshaft bearing caps but do not remove the bolts from the caps
     
    Rocker arms, rocker shafts and bearing caps, as an assembly
     
    Camshaft from the cylinder head
     

  10.  
  11. Inspect the bearing journals on the camshaft, cylinder head, and bearing caps.
  12.  

To install:


NOTE
The right bank camshaft is identified by a 4mm slit at the rear end of the camshaft.

  1. Lubricate the camshaft journals and camshaft with clean engine oil and install the camshaft in the cylinder head. Be sure to properly position the knock pin of the camshaft as noted during removal.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealer at the ends of the bearing caps and install the rocker arms, rocker shafts and bearing caps as an assembly. Properly position the arrows on the bearing caps.
  4.  
  5. Torque the bearing cap bolts in the following sequence: No. 3, No. 2, No. 1 and No. 4 to 85 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Repeat the sequence increasing the torque to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the auto lash adjuster retainer tools from the rocker arms.
  10.  
  11. Install the camshaft sprocket and bolt.
  12.  
  13. Using a camshaft sprocket holding tool, hold the sprocket and tighten the bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Timing belt and valve covers
     
    CMP sensor
     
    Intake manifold plenum stay bracket
     
    Negative battery cable and check for leaks
     

  16.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the timing belt.
  2.  
  3. On the left side, remove the thermostat housing assembly. Remove the PCV valve hose connection, spark plug cable and battery cable connection.
  4.  
  5. On the right side, remove the intake manifold plenum, distributor, breather hose connection and spark plug cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rocker arm cover retaining bolts. Remove the rocker arm cover. Discard the gasket.
  8.  
  9. Install tool MD998443 on the rocker arms, so that the lash adjusters will not fall out.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the rocker arm and shaft assembly mounting bolts. Remove the rocker arm and shaft assembly with the bolts still attached.
  12.  
  13. Use tool MB990767 to hold the camshaft sprocket in place. Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. Remove the camshaft sprocket. Remove the oil seal.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head.

To install:

  1. Coat the camshaft oil seal lip with clean engine oil. Use special tool MB991559 and MD998713 to press fit the camshaft oil seal. Lubricate the camshaft with clean engine oil. Install the camshaft.

  3. Install the camshaft sprocket.
  4.  
  5. Align the timing mark of the camshaft sprocket (right side) with that of the cylinder head. Align the mating marks on the distributor housing and coupling. Install the distributor.

  7. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  8.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt
     
    Rocker arm cover
     
    Lash adjuster clips on the rocker arms, then loosen the bearing cap bolts. Do not remove the bolts from the bearing caps.
     
    Rocker arms, shafts and bearing caps as an assembly
     
    Camshafts
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshafts with engine oil and position them on the cylinder heads.
  2.  
  3. Position the dowel pins as shown in the drawing.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing caps/rocker arm assemblies. Tighten the bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
     
    Rocker arm cover using a new gasket
     
    Timing belt and remaining components
     
    Negative battery cable

  6.  

Evolution
2.0L Engine
  1. Remove the engine under cover. Remove the side cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery cable. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air duct assembly. Remove the air pipe -C- assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accelerator cable. Remove the timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the oil feed control valve connector and remove the oil feed control valve and O-ring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker cover center cover. Remove the spark plug cables and ignition coils.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the front heated oxygen sensor connector, crankshaft position sensor connector, control wiring harness connection and rocker cover PCV hose.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rocker cover breather hose, upper radiator hose and camshaft position sensor connector (exhaust and inlet side).
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the ground terminal, the control wiring harness connection and vacuum hose and pipe assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts. Remove the valve cover. Remove the spark plug hole gaskets. Remove and discard the valve cover gasket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the camshaft position sensor support cover, and gasket. Remove the camshaft position sensing cylinder (exhaust side).
  22.  
  23. Remove the camshaft position sensor support, cover and gasket.
  24.  
  25. Remove the camshaft sensing cylinder (intake side). Remove the camshaft position sensor support. Remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket and oil seal. Remove the intake camshaft sprocket and oil seal.
  26.  
  27. Remove the front camshaft bearing cap. Remove the rear camshaft bearing cap.
  28.  
  29. Remove bearing cap number 2, 5, 3 and 4. Remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket and washer
  30.  
  31. Remove the intake camshaft sprocket and oil seal. Remove the camshaft bearing front cap. Remove bearing cap number 2, 5, 3 and 4. Remove the intake camshaft.

To install:

  1. Coat the camshafts with clean engine oil. Position the camshafts on the cylinder head.
    NOTE
    Do not install the wrong camshaft on the wrong side. The exhaust camshaft has a slit at the rear surface.

  3. Set the dowel pin of the camshaft to the position shown in the illustration.

  5. Since the shape of the bearing caps numbers 2 thru 5 are identical, check the identification marks so that the bearing cap number (intake or exhaust) is installed according to the direction in the illustration.

  7. Apply sealant, part number 8679/8678 or equivalent, to the positions of the upper side of the cylinder head as shown in the illustration.

  9. Tighten the bearing caps, increasing the pressure in two to three passes and finally tightening the bolts to 20 ft. lbs.
