CAUTION
Work MUST NOT be started until at least 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative battery cable is disconnected from the battery. This will allow time for the air bag system backup power supply to deplete its stored energy preventing accidental air bag deployment which could result in unnecessary air bag system repairs and/or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disarm the air bag system, as outlined in Section 6.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hood lock release handle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the switches from the knee protector below the steering column and remove the exposed retaining screws. Then remove the knee protector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering column upper and lower covers. Use care removing the covers to prevent breakage of alignment tabs.
  12.  
  13. Remove lap cooler and foot shower duct work. Detach the ignition switch harness connectors.
  14.  
  15. Remove mounting screws from the ignition switch and pull switch from interlock cylinder.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install ignition switch into interlock housing. Align keyway of ignition switch with lock cylinder and secure with mounting screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect the ignition switch electrical harness plug.
  4.  
  5. Install lap cooler and foot shower duct work.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Install the knee protector and switches.
  10.  
  11. Install the hood release handle.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and check all functions of column-mounted switches and the ignition switch for proper operation.

CAUTION

  11. Remove the steering column upper and lower covers. Use care removing the covers to prevent breakage of alignment tabs.

  13. Remove lap cooler and foot shower duct work. Detach the ignition switch harness connectors.
  14.  
  15. Remove mounting screws from the ignition switch and pull switch from interlock cylinder.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install ignition switch into interlock housing. Align keyway of ignition switch with lock cylinder and secure with mounting screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect the ignition switch electrical harness plug.
  4.  
  5. Install lap cooler and foot shower duct work.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Install the knee protector and switches.
  10.  
  11. Install the hood release handle.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and check all functions of column-mounted switches and the ignition switch for proper operation.

Eclipse
1999 Models
  1. Position the wheels in the straight ahead position, then turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped with SRS, wrap the negative cable with insulated tape and wait at least 60 seconds before continuing the procedure, in order to allow the air bag system time to disarm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hood lock release lever from the lower panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower instrument panel knee protector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper and lower steering column cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clip that holds the wiring against the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Remove the key reminder switch, if equipped. Unplug the ignition switch from the steering lock cylinder and remove.
  16.  
  17. Insert the key into the steering lock cylinder and turn to the ACC position.
  18.  
  19. With a small cross-tip screwdriver, push the lock pin of the steering lock cylinder inward and then pull the lock cylinder out towards you.
    NOTE
    When equipped with automatic transaxle, the vehicles have safety-lock systems and will have a key interlock cable installed in a slide lever on the side of the key cylinder. Carefully unhook the interlock cable from the lock cylinder while withdrawing cylinder from lock housing.

To install:

  1. With the ignition key removed, install the slide lever to the steering lock cylinder. Connect the interlock cable to the slide lever and the steering lock cylinder. Apply grease to the interlock cable and install cylinder into the lock housing.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with key interlock system, place the gearshift selector in P with the engine OFF . Check the system operation as follows:
    1. Check that the gear select lever can not be moved and the button on the lever can not be pushed under with the ignition key in the LOCK or OFF position, and the brake pedal not depressed.
    2.  
    3. Turn the ignition key to the ACC position. Depress the brake pedal. Press the button on the select lever. Check to be sure that under this conditions, the select lever can be moved from the from the P position to any other position. Press the button a few times to be sure that the select lever moves smoothly.
    4.  
    5. Check to be sure that at all other positions of the select lever other than P , the ignition key can not be turned to the OFF position. Check to be sure the ignition key turns smoothly to the OFF position when the selector lever is in the P position.

  5. If a malfunction is discovered with the shift lock mechanism, adjust or check the key interlock system.
  6.  
  7. Install the ignition switch plug carefully and make sure no wires in the harness are pinched.
  8.  
  9. Install the wiring clip. Align the matchmarks and install the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Install the steering wheel retainer nut and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the steering column covers.
  12.  
  13. Install the knee protector.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and check the ignition switch and lock for proper operation.
  16.  

2000-05 Models
  1. Position the wheels in the straight ahead position, then turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped with SRS, wrap the negative cable with insulated tape and wait at least 60 seconds before continuing the procedure, in order to allow the air bag system time to disarm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the key ring antenna and key reminder switch.
  8.  
  9. Insert the key in the steering lock cylinder and turn it to the ACC position.
  10.  
  11. Using a small Phillips head screwdriver, pull the steering lock cylinder toward you.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition switch.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Mirage
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped, disarm the air bag system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hood lock release lever from the lower panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower instrument panel knee protector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ductwork with the lower knee panel and remove the steering wheel assembly.
    NOTE
    Use proper steering wheel puller equipment when removing the steering wheel. The use of a hammer for removal could damage the collapsible mechanism within the column.

  9. Remove the lower steering column cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper steering column cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clip that holds the wiring harness against the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Unplug the ignition switch harness connector. Remove the ignition switch mounting screws and pull the switch from the steering lock cylinder.
    NOTE
    Vehicles equipped with automatic transaxle have safety-lock systems and will have a key interlock cable installed in a slide lever on the side of the key cylinder. Carefully unhook the interlock cable from the lock cylinder while withdrawing the cylinder from the lock housing.

To install:


NOTE
To remove the steering lock, use a hacksaw or equivalent to cut the special bolts through the bracket. The bracket and bolts must be replaced with new ones.

  1. With the ignition key removed, install the slide lever and the interlock cable to the steering lock cylinder. Apply grease to the interlock cable and install the cylinder into the lock housing. Check for normal operation of the interlock system.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition switch into the rear of the lock cylinder housing. Be sure to align the keyway of the ignition switch with interlock cylinder.
  4.  
  5. Attach the harness connections and install the wiring clip.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering column upper and lower covers.
  8.  
  9. Install the knee protector.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable, enable the air bag system (if equipped) and check the ignition switch and lock for proper operation.
  12.  

Mirage And Galant
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped, disarm the air bag system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hood lock release lever from the lower panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower instrument panel knee protector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ductwork with the lower knee panel and remove the steering wheel assembly.
  8.  


NOTE
Use proper steering wheel puller equipment when removing the steering wheel. The use of a hammer for removal could damage the collapsible mechanism within the column.

  1. Remove the lower steering column cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper steering column cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the clip that holds the wiring harness against the steering column.
  6.  
  7. For Galant models, insert the key into the steering lock cylinder and turn to the ACC position.
  8.  
  9. For Galant models, using a small pointed tool, push the lock pin of the steering lock cylinder inward and pull the lock cylinder out.
  10.  
  11. For Galant models, remove the key reminder switch, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Unplug the ignition switch harness connector. Remove the ignition switch mounting screws and pull the switch from the steering lock cylinder.
  14.  


NOTE
Vehicles equipped with automatic transaxle have safety-lock systems and will have a key interlock cable installed in a slide lever on the side of the key cylinder. Carefully unhook the interlock cable from the lock cylinder while withdrawing the cylinder from the lock housing.
