Removal & Installation



Diamante

CAUTION
The air bag system (SRS or SIR) must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, disable the air bag system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel as outlined earlier in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hood lock release handle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the knee protector panel under the steering column, then the upper and lower column covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lap cooler and foot blower duct work as necessary. Carefully detach the combination switch connectors.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch assembly and secure all harness connectors with clips if needed. Make sure the wires are not pinched or out of place.
  2.  
  3. Install the column covers and knee protector and all connectors.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the foot blower duct work and lap cooler.
  6.  
  7. Confirm that the front wheels are in a straight-ahead position.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable, turn the key to the ON position, the SRS warning light should illuminate for seven seconds and go out. If the warning light is not functioning properly, refer to SRS system diagnosis.
  12.  
  13. Check all functions of the combination switch for proper operation.
  14.  

Eclipse
1999 Models
  1. Position the wheels in the straight ahead position, then turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wrap the negative cable with insulated tape and wait at least 60 seconds before continuing the procedure, in order to allow the air bag system time to disarm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the retainers, then remove lower column cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screw, then remove the column pad.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the upper column cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retainers, then remove the clock spring and combination switch assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the combination switch assembly and clock spring and secure with the retainers.
  2.  
  3. Install the column covers and pad.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tape from the negative battery cable, then connect the cable.
  8.  
  9. Turn the ignition ON and check the SRS warning light for proper operation.
  10.  

2000-05 Models
  1. Position the wheels in the straight ahead position, then turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wrap the negative cable with insulated tape and wait at least 60 seconds before continuing the procedure, in order to allow the air bag system time to disarm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove clockspring and combination switch assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Align the mating marks of the clock spring. Turn the front wheels to the straight-ahead position. Then install the clock spring to the column switch. Turn the clock spring clockwise fully. Then turn it back approximately 3 turns counterclockwise to align the mating marks.

  3. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Turn the ignition ON and check the SRS warning light for proper operation.
  10.  

Galant
1999-2003 Models

CAUTION
The air bag system (SRS or SIR) must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, disable the air bag system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel as outlined earlier in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the knee protector panel under the steering column, then the upper and lower column covers.
  8.  
  9. If equipped, remove the four screws retaining the cruise control slip ring to the switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two retaining screws from the combination switch and remove the switch from the column.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch assembly and secure all harness connectors with clips if needed. Make sure the wires are not pinched or out of place.
  2.  
  3. Install the column covers and knee protector and all connectors.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the foot blower duct work and lap cooler.
  6.  
  7. Confirm that the front wheels are in a straight-ahead position.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable, turn the key to the ON position, the SRS warning light should illuminate for seven seconds and go out. If the warning light is not functioning properly, refer to SRS system diagnosis.
  12.  
  13. Check all functions of the combination switch for proper operation.

2004-05 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Disable the air bag system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel as outlined earlier in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clockspring and combination switch.
  10.  

To install:


WARNING
Ensure that the clock spring-s mating marks are properly aligned. If not, the steering wheel may not rotate completely during a turn, or the flat cable in the clock spring could be damaged, This would prevent normal SRS operation and possibly cause serious injury to the driver.

  1. Install the combination switch.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  4.  
  5. Align the mating marks of the clock spring as follows: Turn the clock spring clockwise fully. Then turn it back approximately 3-3/4 turns counterclockwise to align the mating marks.
  6.  
  7. Turn the front wheels to the straight-ahead position. Then install the clock spring to the column switch.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  12.  

Mirage

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. If equipped, disable the air bag system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel as outlined earlier in this section.

  7. Remove the knee protector panel under the steering column, then the upper and lower column covers.
  8.  
  9. Detach all connectors, remove the wiring clip and remove the column switch assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch assembly and secure all harness connectors with clips if needed. Make sure the wires are not pinched or out of place.
  2.  
  3. Install the column covers and knee protector and all connectors.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the foot blower duct work and lap cooler.
  6.  
  7. Confirm that the front wheels are in a straight-ahead position.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable, turn the key to the ON position, the SRS warning light should illuminate for seven seconds and go out. If the warning light is not functioning properly, refer to SRS system diagnosis.
  12.  
  13. Check all functions of the combination switch for proper operation.
