Removal & Installation



Galant And Eclipse
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels and drums
     
    Lever return spring
     
    Shoe-to-lever spring
     
    Adjuster lever
     
    Auto-adjuster assembly
     
    Retainer spring
     
    Brake shoe hold-down springs and spring cups
     
    Shoe-to-shoe spring
     
    Brake shoes
     
    Parking brake cable from the lever on the rear shoe

To install:

  1. Remove the parking brake lever from the used shoe and install it on the new brake shoe. Make sure the wave washer is installed in the proper direction.
  2.  
  3. Clean the backing plate and lightly apply brake grease to the 6 shoe support pads.
  4.  
  5. Clean the adjuster assembly and apply brake grease to the threads.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Parking brake cable to the lever on the rear shoe
     
    Rear shoe on the backing plate and the hold-down spring and pin
     
    Front shoe on the backing plate and the hold-down spring and pin
     
    Adjuster assembly between the 2 shoes
     
    Shoe-to-shoe spring
     
    Retainer spring
     
    Adjuster lever
     
    Shoe-to-lever spring
     
    Lever return spring

  9. Adjust the brake shoes

    Drum
     
    Wheels

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels and drums.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lever return spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shoe-to-lever spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the adjuster lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the auto-adjuster assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retainer spring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs and spring cups.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shoe-to-shoe spring.
  18.  
  19. Remove the brake shoes.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever on the rear shoe.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Remove the parking brake lever from the used shoe and install it on the new brake shoe. Make sure the wave washer is installed in the proper direction.
  2.  
  3. Clean the backing plate and lightly apply brake grease to the six shoe support pads.
  4.  
  5. Clean the adjuster assembly and apply brake grease to the threads; do not use more grease than necessary.
  6.  
  7. Connect the parking brake cable to the lever on the rear shoe.
  8.  
  9. Position the rear shoe on the backing plate and install the hold-down spring and pin.
  10.  
  11. Position the front shoe on the backing plate and install the hold-down spring and pin.
