Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and properly support vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove appropriate wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the sway bar and remove the strut assembly.
  6.  
  7. Support the trailing arm assembly and remove the self-locking nut connecting the control arm to the trailing arm.
  8.  
  9. Using a joint separation tool, disconnect the upper ball joint from the trailing arm.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the control arm from the subframe and remove the assembly.
  12.  

To install

  1. Install the control arm to the subframe and lightly tighten the mounting bolt.
  2.  
  3. Connect the control arm to the trailing arm and tighten the self-locking nut to 54-61 ft. lbs. (75-89 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the strut assembly and connect the sway bar.
  6.  
  7. Install wheel and lower vehicle.
  8.  
  9. With full weight of vehicle on the ground, tighten the control arm to subframe bolt to 54-61 ft. lbs. (75-89 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Check rear wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
  12.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Position a floor jack to properly support the knuckle before removing the upper control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper control arm and knuckle connecting bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper control arm assembly mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper control arm bracket assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper control arm bracket. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install

  1. Install the upper control arm to its mounting.
  2.  
  3. Position the upper control arm so that value -A- is 1.38-1.54 inches, as shown in the illustration.
  4.  
  5. Check the installation angle -B- and -C- as shown in the illustration.

  7. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the rear alignment, as necessary.
  10.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor retaining bolts.
  4.  
  5. Position a floor jack to properly support the knuckle before removing the upper control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper arm assembly and knuckle retaining bolt and nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper arm assembly retaining bolts and nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install

  1. Install the upper control arm to its mounting.
  2.  
  3. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure. Note the following torques:
    1. Upper arm assembly mounting bolts: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Upper arm to knuckle connecting bolt: 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)
    4.

  5. Check and adjust the rear alignment, as necessary.
  6.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower arm assembly, using a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. After making a mating mark on the toe-in or camber adjusting bolt, remove the control link or lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper control arm retaining bolts. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install

  1. Install the upper control arm to its mounting.
  2.  
  3. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the rear alignment, as necessary.
  6.  

Evolution
  1. Remove the fuel filler cap, when removing the left side upper arm assembly.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel protector and bolt, when removing the left side upper arm assembly.
  6.  
  7. Position a floor jack to properly support the rotor and hub assembly before removing the upper control
    NOTE
    Do not remove the nut from the ball joint. Loosen it and use special tool MB991897 to avoid possible damage to the ball joint threads. Hang the special tool in place with wire or string to prevent it from falling.

  9. Install the special tool. Turn the bolt and knob as necessary to make the jaws of the tool parallel. Tighten the bolt by hand and confirm that the jaws are still parallel.
    NOTE
    When adjusting the jaws in parallel, make sure the knob is in the vertical (upward) position.

  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the upper arm assembly and the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper arm assembly mounting bolts. Remove the upper arm stopper.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install

  1. Install the upper control arm to its mounting.
  2.  
  3. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the rear alignment, as necessary.
