Wheel Bearings

On most models, the wheel bearings used are sealed units and do not require routine maintenance. However on some Galant and Mirage models, the rear wheel bearing do require periodic repacking.

Adjustment




NOTE
Never disassemble the rear hub bearing. The wheel bearing is serviced by replacement of the hub.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and brake disc or brake drum.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dust cap and tighten the flange nut to 130 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Using a dial indicator, measure wheel bearing end-play. The maximum limit for end-play is 0.0020 inches (0.05mm).
  10.  
  11. Using a spring scale and a rope wrapped around the bolts, measure the rotary sliding resistance of the bearing/hub. The maximum limit for resistance is 4 lbs. (19 N).
  12.  
  13. If any of the readings exceed the specifications, replacement of the hub is required.
  14.  
  15. Install the dust cap.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake disc and caliper, or brake drum.
  18.  
  19. Install the rear wheel assembly and lower the vehicle to the floor.
  20.  

Measure the wheel bearing end-play using a dial indicator. The end-play should be 0.002 inches (0.05mm) or less with the wheel bearing locknut torqued to specifications. The wheel bearings are sealed units and are not adjustable. If defective, replacement is the only option.

The wheel bearings on these vehicles are not adjustable. If the bearings are noisy or become loose, they must be replaced.

The rear wheel bearings are not adjustable. If the bearings are noisy or become loose, they must be replaced.

Removal & Installation




NOTE
Never disassemble the rear hub bearing. The wheel bearing is serviced by replacement of the hub.

  1. If equipped with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper and brake disc or brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Remove the dust cap and flange nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear hub assembly.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear hub assembly using a new flange nut. Tighten the flange nut to 130 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the dust cap.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel speed sensor if removed. The air gap should be 0.012-0.035 in. (0.3-0.9mm).
  6.  
  7. Install the brake disc and caliper, or brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear wheel assembly and lower the vehicle to the floor.
  10.  


NOTE
The hub assembly is not repairable; if defective, replacement is the only option. If the hub is removed for any reason it must be replaced.

  1. Raise and support vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the both of the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and the brake disc. Support the caliper with wire to prevent stress to the brake hose.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with ABS, remove the bolt holding the speed sensor to the trailing arm and remove the sensor.
  8.  


NOTE
The speed sensor has a pole piece projecting from it. This exposed tip must be protected from impact or scratches. Do not allow the pole piece to contact the toothed wheel during removal or installation.

  1. Remove the grease cap, self-locking nut and tongued washer.
  2.  


NOTE
Do not use an air gun to remove the hub locknut.

  1. Remove the rear hub assembly from the spindle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolts that secure the ABS sensor ring to the hub and remove the ring from the hub.
  4.  

To install

  1. Secure the sensor ring to the hub assembly and tighten the mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub assembly, tongued washer and a new self-locking nut. Tighten the nut to 166 ft. lbs. (230 Nm), align with the indentation in the spindle, and crimp.
  4.  
  5. Using a rope around the hub bolts and a spring balance, measure the resistance necessary to rotate the hub. If the resistance exceeds 7 ft. lbs. (13 Nm), loosen and retighten the locknut. If the resistance still exceeds the specification, the hub must be replaced.
  6.  
  7. Using a dial indicator, measure the hub endplay. The endplay should be 0.002 inches (0.05mm) or less.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake rotor and caliper assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the speed sensor to the knuckle.
  12.  


NOTE
Route the speed sensor cable correctly. Improper installation may cause cable damage and system failure. Use the white stripe on the outer insulation to keep the sensor harness properly positioned.

  1. Use a brass or other non-magnetic feeler gauge to check the air gap between the tip of the pole piece and the toothed wheel. Correct gap is 0.008-0.028 in. (0.2-0.7mm). Tighten the sensor bracket nut with the sensor located so the gap is the same at several points on the toothed wheel. If the gap is incorrect, it is likely that the toothed wheel is worn or improperly installed.
  2.  
  3. Bleed the brake system and install the rear wheels.
  4.  


NOTE
The hub and bearing assembly is serviced as a unit.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper and the brake disc. Support the caliper with wire.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with ABS, remove the bolt holding the speed sensor to the trailing arm and remove the sensor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the grease cap, self-locking nut and tongued washer.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear hub assembly from the spindle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolts that secure the ABS sensor ring to the hub and remove the ring from the hub.
  16.  

To install

  1. Secure the sensor ring to the hub assembly and tighten the mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub assembly, tongued washer and a new self-locking nut. Torque the nut to 166 lbs. (230 Nm), align with the indentation in the spindle, and crimp.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake rotor and caliper assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the speed sensor to the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear wheels.
  10.  

  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the appropriate wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS), remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum from the hub assembly.
  8.  
  9. From the back of the knuckle, remove the 4 bolts securing the hub to the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle.
    NOTE
    The hub assembly is not serviceable and should not be disassembled.

  12.  
  13. If replacing the hub, use special socket MB991248 and a press, to remove the wheel sensor rotor from the hub.
  14.  

To install

  1. Press the wheel sensor rotor onto the hub.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Hub to the knuckle and tighten the mounting bolts to 54-65 ft. lbs. (74-88 Nm)
     
    Brake drum on the hub
     
    VSS, if equipped with ABS
     
    Wheel assembly and lower the vehicle
     

  4.  


NOTE
The hub and bearing assembly is serviced as a unit.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel and tire assembly
     
    Rear wheel speed sensor if equipped with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS)
     
    Brake drum. Or, if equipped with disc brakes, remove the caliper assembly and rotor. Suspend the caliper out of the way with wire.
     

  6.  
  7. On vehicles with rear disc brakes, remove the parking brake shoes.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hub mounting bolts from behind the backing plate and remove the hub.
    NOTE
    The rotor for the ABS must be removed and installed using a press.

  10.  

To install:

  1. Press the rotor (ABS) to the hub.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and tighten the mounting bolts to 54-65 ft. lbs. (74-88 Nm)
     
    Parking brake shoes if equipped
     
    Rotor and caliper or drum
     
    Speed sensor if equipped
     
    Wheel and tire assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle to the floor.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the appropriate wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS), remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum from the hub assembly.
  8.  
  9. From the back of the knuckle, remove the 4 bolts securing the hub to the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle.
    NOTE
    The hub assembly is not serviceable and should not be disassembled.

  12.  
  13. If replacing the hub, use special socket MB991248 and a press, to remove the wheel sensor rotor from the hub.

To install

  1. Press the wheel sensor rotor onto the hub.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Hub to the knuckle and tighten the mounting bolts to 54-65 ft. lbs. (74-88 Nm)
     
    Brake drum on the hub
     
    VSS, if equipped with ABS
     
    Wheel assembly and lower the vehicle
     

  4.  


NOTE
The wheel bearing is serviced by replacement of the hub.

  1. If equipped with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS), remove the wheel speed sensor.

  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Caliper and brake disc or brake drum
     
    Dust cap and flange nut
     
    Rear hub assembly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rear hub assembly using a new flange nut. Torque the flange nut to 130 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).

NOTE
The wheel bearing is serviced by replacement of the hub.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cotter pin. Remove the driveshaft nut and washer.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear ABS sensor. Remove the caliper. Position it to the side with wire. Do not disconnect the brake hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the parking brake shoe and lining assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clip. Remove the parking brake cable connection.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the rear driveshaft connection. Remove the wheel hub assembly retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear hub assembly from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the parking brake.

With Disc Brakes
  1. Remove the cotter pin, halfshaft nut and washer.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the appropriate wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with ABS, remove the vehicle speed sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the caliper and brake pads. Support the caliper out of the way using wire.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake rotor from the hub assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the parking brake shoes as follows:
  14.  

  1. Remove the upper shoe to anchor springs.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower shoe to shoe spring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the actuating lever.
  8.  

  1. From the back of the knuckle, remove the four bolts securing the hub to the knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle.
  4.  


NOTE
The hub assembly is not serviceable and should not be disassembled.

  1. If replacing the hub, use special socket MB991248 and a press to remove the wheel sensor rotor from the hub.
  2.  

To install

  1. Press the wheel sensor rotor onto the hub.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub to the knuckle and tighten the mounting bolts to 54-65 ft. lbs. (74-88 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the parking brake shoes.
  6.  
  7. Position the rotor on the hub. Install a couple of lug nuts and lightly tighten to hold rotor on hub.
  8.  
  9. Install the caliper holder and place brake pads in holder. Slide caliper over brake pads and install guide pins. Once caliper is secured, lug nuts can be removed.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with ABS, install the vehicle speed sensor.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel assembly and lower the vehicle.
  14.

  3. Raise the vehicle and support safely.

  5. Remove the appropriate wheel assembly.

  7. Position the rotor on the hub. Install a couple of lug nuts and lightly tighten to hold rotor on hub.

  5. If equipped with ABS, remove the vehicle speed sensor.

  7. Remove the brake drum from the hub assembly.
  8.  
  9. From the back of the knuckle, remove the four bolts securing the hub to the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle.
  12.  


NOTE
The hub assembly is not serviceable and should not be disassembled.

  1. If replacing the hub, use special socket MB991248 and a press to remove the wheel sensor rotor from the hub.
  2.

To install

  1. Press the wheel sensor rotor onto the hub.
