Removal & Installation 1

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt
     
    Alternator brace from the water pump
     
    Timing belt rear cover
     
    Water pump mounting bolts
     
    Water pump, gasket and O-ring
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring on the water inlet pipe. Coat the O-ring with water or coolant. Do not allow oil or other grease to contact the O-ring.
     
    Water pump to the engine block, with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm)
     
    Alternator brace on the water pump. Torque the brace pivot bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
     
    Timing belt rear cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Remaining components
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the engine with coolant.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt
     
    Alternator brace from the water pump
     
    Timing belt rear cover
     
    Water pump mounting bolts
     
    Water pump, gasket and O-ring
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring on the water inlet pipe. Coat the O-ring with water or coolant. Do not allow oil or other grease to contact the O-ring.
     
    Water pump to the engine block, with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm)
     
    Alternator brace on the water pump. Torque the brace pivot bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
     
    Timing belt rear cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Remaining components
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the engine with coolant.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine undercover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the clamp bolt from the power steering hose.
  8.  
  9. Support the engine with the appropriate equipment and remove the engine mount bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the pump, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove the alternator brace.
    NOTE
    The water pump bolts are different in size. Note their locations for installation.

  16.  
  17. Remove the water pump, gasket and O-ring where the water inlet pipe joins the pump.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean both gasket surfaces of the water pump and block.
  2.  
  3. Install a new O-ring into the groove on the front end of the water inlet pipe. Do not apply oils or grease to the O-ring. Wet with water only.
  4.  
  5. Using a new gasket, install the water pump assembly to the engine block. Torque the mounting bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the hoses to the pump.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
  10.  
  11. Install the engine drive belts.
  12.  
  13. Fill the system with coolant.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens and fill the radiator completely.
  16.  
  17. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.
  18.  

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the coolant hoses from the pump, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator brace.
    NOTE
    The water pump bolts are different in size. Note their locations for installation.

  10.  
  11. Remove the water pump, gasket and O-ring where the water inlet pipe joins the pump.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean both gasket surfaces of the water pump and block.
  2.  
  3. Install a new O-ring into the groove on the front end of the water inlet pipe. Do not apply oils or grease to the O-ring. Wet with water only.
  4.  
  5. Install the water pump assembly to the engine block, with new gasket. Torque the 8mm mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm), and the 10mm mounting bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the hoses to the pump
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt.
  10.  
  11. Install the engine drive belts.
  12.  
  13. Fill the system with coolant.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens and fill the radiator completely.
  16.  
  17. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.
  18.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump bolts(s) and pump.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump gasket and O-ring.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the water pump along with a new gasket and O-ring. Tighten the mounting bolt(s) to 15-19 ft. lbs. (20-26 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the timing belt.
  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system and connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine undercover
     
    Clamp bolt from the power steering hose
     
    Engine drive belts
     

  6.  
  7. Support the engine with the appropriate equipment and remove the engine mount bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The water pump mounting bolts are different in length, note their positioning for reassembly.



    Timing belt
     
    Power steering pump bracket
     
    Alternator brace
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the water pump, gasket and O-ring where the water inlet pipe(s) joins the pump.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean both gasket surfaces of the water pump and block.
  2.  
  3. For 1.5L engines, install a new O-ring into the groove on the front end of the water inlet pipe. Do not apply oils or grease to the O-ring. Wet the O-ring with water only.
  4.  
  5. For 1.8L engines, apply a 0.09-0.12 in. (2.5-3.0mm) continuous bead of sealant to water pump and install the pump assembly. Install the water pump within 15 minutes of the application of the sealant. Wait 1 hour after installation of the water pump to refill the cooling system or starting the engine.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Gasket and pump assembly and tighten the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
     
    Remaining components in the reverse order of removal
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the system with coolant.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens and fill the radiator completely.
  12.  
  13. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.
  14.  

1.5L And 1.8L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  


CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

  1. Remove the engine undercover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the clamp bolt from the power steering hose.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Support the engine with the appropriate equipment and remove the engine mount bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt. Refer to the timing belt procedure in this section.
  10.  
  11. Remove the power steering pump bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the alternator brace.
  14.  


NOTE
The water pump mounting bolts are different in length, note their positioning for reassembly.

  1. Remove the water pump, gasket and O-ring where the water inlet pipe(s) joins the pump.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean both gasket surfaces of the water pump and block.
  2.  
  3. For 1.5L engines, install a new O-ring into the groove on the front end of the water inlet pipe. Do not apply oils or grease to the O-ring. Wet the O-ring with water only.
  4.  
  5. For 1.8L engines, apply a 0.09-0.12 in. (2.5-3.0mm) continuous bead of sealant to water pump and install the pump assembly. Install the water pump within 15 minutes of the application of the sealant. Wait 1 hour after installation of the water pump to refill the cooling system or start the engine.
  6.  
  7. Install the gasket and pump assembly and tighten the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). Use care when aligning the water pump with the water inlet pipe.
  8.  
  9. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  10.  
  11. Fill the system with coolant.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens and fill the radiator completely.
  14.  
  15. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.
  16.  

2.4L And 3.0L Engines



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt tensioner pulley on 2.4L engine
     
    Timing belt on 3.0L engine
     
    Alternator brace from the water pump
     
    On 3.0L engine, remove the thermostat
     
    Timing belt rear cover
     
    Water pump mounting bolts
     
    Water pump, gasket and O-ring
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring on the water inlet pipe. Coat the O-ring with water or coolant. Do not allow oil or other grease to contact the O-ring.
     
    Water pump to the engine block, with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm)
     
    Alternator brace on the water pump. Torque the brace pivot bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
     
    Timing belt rear cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Remaining components
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the engine with coolant.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine undercover
     
    Clamp bolt from the power steering hose
     

  6.  
  7. Support the engine with the appropriate equipment and remove the engine mount bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine drive belts and the air conditioning tensioner bracket
     
    Timing belt covers from the front of the engine
     
    Camshaft and silent shaft timing belts
     
    Alternator brace
     
    Water pump, gasket and O-ring where the water inlet pipe(s) joins the pump
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean both gasket surfaces of the water pump and block.
  2.  
  3. Install a new O-ring into the groove on the front end of the water inlet pipe and wet with clean antifreeze only. Do not apply oils or grease to the O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Using a new gasket, install the water pump assembly. Tighten bolts with the head mark 4 to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) and bolts with the head mark 7 to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Timing belts
     
    Engine drive belts
     
    Engine mount bracket
     
    Engine undercover
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the system with coolant.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens and fill the radiator completely.
  12.  
  13. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.
  14.  

2.4L Engine

  11. Remove the camshaft and silent shaft timing belts. Refer to the timing belt procedure in this section.

  13. Remove the A/C belt idler pulley and pulley bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the alternator brace.
  16.  
  17. Remove the water pump, gasket and O-ring where the water inlet pipe(s) joins the pump.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean both gasket surfaces of the water pump and block.
  2.  
  3. Install a new O-ring into the groove on the front end of the water inlet pipe and wet with clean antifreeze only. Do not apply oils or grease to the O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Using a new gasket, install the water pump assembly. Tighten bolts with the head mark 4 to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) and bolts with the head mark 7 to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the A/C pulley and pulley bracket.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belts. Refer to the timing belt procedure in this section.
  10.  
  11. Install the engine drive belts.
  12.  
  13. Install the engine mount bracket.
  14.  
  15. Install the engine undercover.
  16.  
  17. Fill the system with coolant.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens and fill the radiator completely.
  20.  
  21. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.
  22.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump from the engine. Discard the water pump gasket and O-ring.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring on the water inlet pipe. Coat the O-ring with water or coolant. Do not allow oil or other grease to contact the O-ring.
     
    Water pump to the engine block, with new gasket. Tighten the mounting bolts.
     

  2.  
  3. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine coolant. Start the engine and check for leaks.

3.0L & 3.5L Engines

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.

  13. Fill the system with coolant.

  15. Connect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens and fill the radiator completely.
  16.  
  17. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.
  18.  

3.8L Engine



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft position sensor connector clip. Remove the crankshaft position sensor mounting bolt. Remove the sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the water pump from the engine. Discard the water pump gasket and O-ring.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring on the water inlet pipe. Coat the O-ring with water or coolant. Do not allow oil or other grease to contact the O-ring.
     
    Water pump to the engine block, with new gasket. Tighten the mounting bolts.
     

  2.  
  3. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine coolant. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.
