Anti-Lock Control Unit (ALCU)/Engine Control Unit (ECU)

The anti-lock control unit is located behind the right rear quarter trim panel on 1991-94 vehicles or under the passenger side of the dash on 1995-98 vehicles. It is a micro-processor capable of dealing with many inputs simultaneously and controls the function of the solenoid valves within the hydraulic unit.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1991-94 Vehicles

See Figure 1

  1. Turn the key to the OFF position. Ensure that the ignition switch remains OFF throughout the procedure.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the interior right rear quarter trim panel and rear seat back and/or cushion.
  6.  
  7. Release the lock on the bottom of the connector; disconnect the multi-pin connector from the control unit. Access may be easier if the external ground is disconnected from the bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retaining nuts and remove the control unit from its bracket. The bracket may be removed, if desired.

To install:
  1. Place the bracket in position. Install the controller and tighten the retaining nuts.
  2.  
  3. Connect the ground wire to the bracket if removed. Ensure a proper, tight connection. The ground must be connected before the multi-pin harness is connected.
  4.  
  5. Connect the multi-pin connector and secure the lock.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear quarter trim panel and seat.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

1995-98 Vehicles

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right side cowl side trim panel and front scuff plate.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the control unit cover.
  6.  
  7. Detach the electrical connector.
  8.

  1. Remove the retaining nuts, then remove the ABS control unit.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
