REMOVAL

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the ignition wire cover, if equipped.
  2.
  3. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap.
  4.
  5. Position the engine so No. 1 piston is at TDC on its compression stroke. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.
  7. Detach the distributor harness electrical connector.
  8.
  9. Unscrew the distributor cap hold-down screws or release the clips and lift off the distributor cap with all ignition wires still connected. Remove the coil wire, if necessary.
  10.
  11. Matchmark the rotor to the distributor housing and the distributor housing to the engine.
  12.

Do not crank the engine during this procedure. If the engine is cranked, the matchmark must be disregarded.

  1. Remove the hold-down nut.
  2.
  3. Carefully remove the distributor from the engine.
  4.

INSTALLATION

See Figures 2 and 3

Some engines may be sensitive to the routing of the distributor sensor wires. If routed near the high-voltage coil wire or the spark plug wires, the electromagnetic field surrounding the high voltage wires could generate an occasional disruption of the ignition system operation.

Timing Not Disturbed
  1. Install a new distributor housing O-ring and lubricate with clean oil.
  2.
  3. Install the distributor in the engine so the rotor is aligned with the matchmark on the housing and the housing is aligned with the matchmark on the engine. Make sure the distributor is fully seated and the distributor shaft is fully engaged.
  4.
  5. Install the hold-down nut.
  6.
  7. Engage the distributor harness connectors.
  8.
  9. Make sure the sealing O-ring is in place, install the distributor cap and tighten the screws or secure the clips.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
  13. Adjust the ignition timing and tighten the hold-down nut.
  14.

Timing Disturbed
  1. Install a new distributor housing O-ring and lubricate with clean oil.
  2.
  3. Position the engine so the No. 1 piston is at TDC of its compression stroke and the mark on the vibration damper is aligned with 0 on the timing indicator.
  4.
  5. Align the distributor housing and gear mating marks. Install the distributor in engine so the slot or groove of the distributor's installation flange aligns with the distributor installation stud in the engine block. Make sure the distributor is fully seated. Inspect alignment of the distributor rotor making sure the rotor is aligned with the position of the No. 1 ignition wire in the distributor cap.
  6.

Make sure the rotor is pointing to where the No. 1 runner originates inside the cap, if equipped, and not where the No. 1 ignition wire plugs into the cap.

  1. Install the hold-down nut.
  2.
  3. Engage the distributor harness connectors.
  4.
  5. Make sure the sealing O-ring is in place, install the distributor cap and tighten the screws or secure the clips.
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
  9. Adjust the ignition timing and tighten the hold-down bolt.
  10.
