TESTING

See Figure 1

When testing the power transistor(s), an analog-type circuit tester should be used.

  1. Connect the negative terminal of a 1.5V power source to terminal 5 of the power transistor connector.
  2.

Fig. Fig. 1: Testing the power transistor

  1. Check whether there is continuity between terminal 5 and terminal 8 when terminal 6 and the positive terminal are connected and disconnected.
  2.

Connect the negative probe of the tester to terminal 8 of the power transistor connector.

  1. With terminal 6 and the positive terminal connected, there should be continuity between terminal 5 and terminal 8 of the connector.
  2.
  3. With terminal 6 and the positive terminal disconnected, there should be no continuity between terminal 5 and terminal 8 of the connector.
  4.
  5. If the results of the test are not as specified above, replace the power transistor.
  6.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Unplug the electrical connector from the transistor.
  4.
  5. Remove the coil as required.
  6.
  7. Remove the transistor mounting bolts and remove from the engine.
  8.
  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
