Wheel Lug Studs

REPLACEMENT



Front Wheel

If the vehicle is equipped with ABS, removal and disassembly of the front hub is required. Refer to the appropriate procedure in this Section for the removal and installation procedure.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the caliper and support assembly and position out of the way. It is not necessary to disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Do not allow the brake hose to stretch or twist or damage to the hose may occur.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake disc.
  6.  
  7. Position the wheel stud to be replaced towards the cut out area of the dust shield.
  8.  
  9. Carefully press the stud out of the front hub and remove from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the new stud into the hub. Draw the into place using the nut and a stack of washers. Make sure the stud is fully seated.
  2.  

If there is not enough clearance between the hub and the dust shield to install the new stud, removal of the front hub from the steering knuckle will be required. Refer to the appropriate procedure in this Section for the procedure.

  1. Install the brake disc.
  2.  
  3. Install the caliper support and caliper assembly onto the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Before moving the vehicle, pump the brakes until a firm pedal is achieved.
  8.  

Rear Wheel
2WD VEHICLE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear caliper. Remove the brake disc.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hub cap and the wheel bearing nut. Remove the tongued washer from the rear axle hub.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear hub bearing unit.
  12.  
  13. Using the appropriate equipment, drive the lug nut stud from the hub bearing unit.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the new stud into the hub. Draw the into place using the nut and a stack of washers. Make sure the stud is fully seated.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear bearing hub assembly onto the vehicle and install the tongued washer. Install a new wheel bearing nut. Tighten new bearing nut to 188 ft. lbs. (260 Nm) torque.
  4.  
  5. Once the bearing nut is tightened, align with the indentation in the spindle and crimp. This will lock the nut in place.
  6.  
  7. Install the hub (bearing nut) cap.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake disc, caliper and parking brake cable.
  10.  
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle. Before moving the vehicle, pump the brakes until a firm pedal is achieved.
  14.  

AWD VEHICLE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear caliper and support assembly out of the way. Remove the brake disc.
  8.  
  9. Remove the driveshaft and companion flange installation bolts, nuts and washers. Move end of shaft slightly to access the self-locking nut.
  10.  
  11. Using axle holding tool MB990211-01 or equivalent, secure the rear axle shaft in position, then remove the self-locking nut.
  12.  
  13. Using puller and adapter MB990211-01 and MB990241-01 or equivalents, remove the rear axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Press the broken lug nut stud from the axle shaft.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the rear axle shaft to the trailing arm temporarily. Install the companion flange to the rear axle shaft, then install the self-locking nut.
  2.  
  3. While holding the rear axle shaft in position using tool MB990767-01 or equivalent, tighten a new self-locking nut to 159 ft. lbs. (220 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the driveshaft nuts, washers and bolts. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the rear brake disc, caliper assembly and parking brake.
  8.  
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly and lower the vehicle. Check the parking brake stroke and adjust as required.
  10.  
  11. Before moving the vehicle, pump the brakes until a firm pedal is achieved.
