Transaxle Removal & Installation


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  3. Remove the engine under cover.
  5. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  7. On AWD vehicles, drain the engine coolant.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Air cleaner assembly
    Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
    Battery and battery tray

  11. On 2006 vehicles, remove the intake manifold rear plenum stay, EGR pipe and intake manifold plenum. Remove the upper radiator hose, engine oil dipstick and engine hanger.

    Front exhaust pipe from the 2 exhaust manifolds, then disconnect it from the intermediate pipe/catalytic converter (make certain to retain the bolts and nuts for reassembly).
    Adjusting nut
    Transaxle control cable connection
    Inhibitor switch connector
    A/T control solenoid valve connector
    Input and output shaft speed sensor connectors
    Driveshaft (2WD) or driveshaft and output shaft assembly (AWD)
    Transfer case assembly
    Transaxle oil cooler hose
    Transaxle assembly upper part coupling bolts
    Engine oil pan and transaxle assembly coupling bolts
    Drive plate bolts. Use Mitsubishi tool MD998781, or equivalent, to hold the driveplate in position to remove the bolts.
    Centermember assembly
    Rear roll stopper bracket
    Crossmember plate, left side
    Air cleaner bracket
    Transaxle mount bracket assembly
    Transaxle mount stopper
    Manifold Differential Pressure (MDP) sensor

  13. Install Engine Hanger MB991895 to the front fender bolts, as shown in the illustration.

  15. Install Engine Hanger Balancer MB991454, or equivalent, to the engine/transaxle assembly. Place a thick towel on the end of the tool to prevent damaging the firewall.
  17. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Note the torque specifications in the illustration.
  3. Refill the transaxle and transfer case with oil.
  5. Start the vehicle and check for any leaks.
