Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. To remove the left bank ignition coils, perform the following:
    1. Detach the left side ignition coil electrical connectors.
    2.
    3. Remove the left side ignition coils.
    4.

  4.
  5. Remove the intake manifold plenum, as outlined in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  6.
  7. To remove the right bank ignition coils, perform the following:
    1. Detach the right side ignition coil electrical connectors.
    2.
    3. Remove the right side ignition coils.
    4.

  8.
  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Note the tightening specifications on the accompanying illustration.

Testing

Primary Coil & Ignition Power Transistor Continuity Check

An analog-type ohmmeter should be used for this test.

  1. Connect the negative probe of the ohmmeter to terminal 1.
    WARNING
This test must be performed quickly (in less than 10 seconds) to prevent coil from burning and ignition power transistor from breaking.

  2.
  3. Connect and disconnect 4.5 - 9.0 V battery between terminal No. 2 and No. 3, and observe the ohmmeter whether there is continuity or not.

Secondary Coil Check

NOTE
It is not possible to check the secondary coil through the continuity check as a diode is integrated in the secondary coil circuit of this ignition coil. As a result, check the secondary coil using the following procedure.
