Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters

Inspection



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft from the engine.
  4.  
  5. Check the camshaft bearing journals for damage and binding.
  6.  
  7. If the journals are binding, check the cylinder head for damage.
  8.  
  9. Check the cylinder head for clogged oil holes.
  10.  
  11. As required, check the tooth surface of the distributor drive gear teeth of the camshaft. Replace the camshaft if wear is evident.
  12.  
  13. Check the camshaft surface for abnormal wear and damage. Replace the camshaft, as required.
  14.  
  15. Measure the cam height and replace the camshaft if not within specification.
  16.  
  17. Intake camshaft standard specification is 1.472 inches. Minimum limit is 1.452 inches.
  18.  
  19. Exhaust camshaft standard specification is 1.452 inches. Minimum limit is 1.443inches.
  20.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil and cooling system.
  6.  
  7. To remove the left bank rocker arms/shafts, remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Intake plenum, if removing the right bank rocker arms
     
    Timing belt
     
    Thermostat housing
     
    Blow-by and Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hoses, if removing the left bank rocker arms
     
    PCV valve, if removing the left bank
     
    Breather and blow-by hoses, if removing the right bank rocker arms
     
    Ignition coil connectors and ignition coils
     
    Engine control wiring harness clamp
     
    Rocker arm (valve) cover, gasket and spark plug oil seal(s)
     

  8.  


NOTE
Install auto lash adjuster retainers SST MD998443 on the rocker arms



Intake and exhaust rocker arms and shafts by loosening the mounting bolt and removing the rocker arm and shaft assembly with the bolt still attached

Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector and sensor, if removing the left bank camshaft
 
CMP sensor support and sensing cylinder, if removing the left camshaft
 
Camshaft sprocket, using Mitsubishi Special tools MD998715 and MB990767
 
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) pipe B, gasket and EGR valve support, if removing the right bank camshaft
 
Thrust case and O-ring, if removing the right camshaft
 
Camshaft and oil seal
 

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following

    Camshaft oil seal and camshaft
     
    Thrust case and O-ring, right camshaft
     
    EGR valve support, gasket and EGR pipe B, right bank camshaft
     
    Camshaft sprocket, using Mitsubishi Special tools MD998715 and MB990767. Tighten the sprocket bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
     
    CMP sensing cylinder and sensor support, left camshaft
     
    CMP sensor and connector and sensor, left bank camshaft
     

  2.  


NOTE
Lubricate the valve train components with clean engine oil.

  1. Bleed and install the lash adjusters to the to the original bores in the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arms and shafts. Torque the bolts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (28-34 Nm).
     
    Valve cover oil seals and gasket
     
    Valve cover. Torque the bolts to 27-35 inch lbs. (3.0-4.0 Nm).
     

  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative. Fill the engine crankcase and cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Run vehicle and check for leaks.
  10.  

Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the thermostat housing. Remove the blow-by hose connection.
  8.  
  9. Remove the PCV valve connection. Remove the PCV valve.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition coil connector. Remove the ignition coil. Remove the control wiring harness clamp.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover retaining bolts. Remove the rocker arm cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spark plug guide oil seal.
    NOTE
    Install auto lash adjuster retainers SST MD998443 on the rocker arms.




  16.  
  17. Remove the intake and exhaust rocker arms and shafts by loosening the mounting bolts and removing the rocker arm and shaft assembly with the bolt still attached.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector. Remove the camshaft position sensor. Remove the camshaft position sensor support.
  20.  
  21. Remove the camshaft position sensing cylinder.
  22.  
  23. Using a wrench and special tool MD998715, remove the camshaft sprocket.
  24.  
  25. Remove the camshaft. Remove the camshaft oil seal.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Apply grease to the camshaft oil seal, prior to installation. Use special tools MD998713 and MB991559 to press fit the camshaft oil seal into position.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable. On 2005-2006 vehicles, turn the ignition ON and then OFF , and keep it off for at least ten seconds.
  6.  
  7. Run the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
  8.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake manifold plenum assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt. Remove the thermostat housing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the breather hose connection. Remove the blow-by hose connection.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition coil connector. Remove the ignition coil. Remove the control wiring harness clamp.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover retaining bolts. Remove the rocker arm cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spark plug guide oil seal.
    NOTE
    Install auto lash adjuster retainers SST MD998443 on the rocker arms.




  16.  
  17. Remove the intake and exhaust rocker arms and shafts by loosening the mounting bolts and removing the rocker arm and shaft assembly with the bolt still attached.
  18.  
  19. Using a wrench and special tool MD998715, remove the camshaft sprocket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the EGR pipe -B-, gasket and valve support.
  22.  
  23. Remove the thrust case and O-ring.
  24.  
  25. Remove the camshaft. Remove the camshaft oil seal.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Apply grease to the camshaft oil seal, prior to installation. Use special tools MD998713 and MB991559 to press fit the camshaft oil seal into position.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable. On 2005-2006 vehicles, turn the ignition ON and then OFF , and keep it off for at least ten seconds.
  6.  
  7. Run the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
  8.
