Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front and side under covers.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the return hose connection, and then connect a vinyl hose to the return hose, and drain the fluid into a container.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors. For more information, refer to the Engine Electrical Section.
    4.  
    5. While operating the starter motor intermittently, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right several times to drain all of the fluid.
    6.  
    7. Connect the return hose securely, and then secure with the clip.

  7. Remove the power steering pump drive belt, by loosen the tensioner pulley fixing nut or locknut, then remove the belt.

  9. Remove the belt tensioner pulley and bracket.
  10.  
  11. Detach the pressure switch connector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose and gasket.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the power steering suction hose.
  16.  
  17. Remove the power steering pump bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering pump assembly.
    NOTE
    Before removing the power steering pressure switch, wipe the power steering pump clean to prevent foreign debris from entering the pump.

  21. If necessary, remove the power steering pressure switch, as follows:
    1. Detach the harness connector from the male terminal of the pressure switch.
    2.  
    3. Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the switch.

To install:


WARNING
Do not touch the terminal part of the switch during installation as this may damage the switch.

  1. If removed, install the power steering switch, as follows:
    1. Insert the new switch and tighten hand-tight.
    2.  
    3. Use a socket to tighten the pressure switch to 14.5 ft. lbs. (19.6 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Attach the harness connector to the pressure switch.

  3. Install the power steering pump and tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the accompanying illustration.
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering pump bracket and tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the accompanying illustration.
  6.  
  7. Install the suction hose. Make sure the marks on the hose and nipple are positioned as shown in the accompanying illustration.

  9. Install the power steering pressure hose and gasket. Tighten the eye bolt to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm).

  11. Install the belt tensioner bracket and tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the accompanying illustration.
  12.  
  13. Install the belt tensioner pulley. Tighten the bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the power steering pump belt, carefully routing it as shown in the accompanying illustration.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the belt tension, as outlined in the Engine Mechanical Section and tighten the fixing bolt or lock nut and adjusting bolt as specified in the adjustment procedures.

  19. Install the front and side under covers.

  21. Fill the oil reservoir with GENUINE MITSUBISHI POWER STEERING FLUID up to the lower mark of the reservoir, and then bleed the air as outlined at the end of this section.
