Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover, if equipped
     
    Wires
     
    Starter cover
     
    Starter motor
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor and cover. Torque the starter mounting bolts to 20-25 ft. lbs. (26-33 Nm) and the cover retainers to 36-42 inch lbs. (3.9-5.9 Nm).
     
    Wires. Tighten the terminal nut to 80-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    Engine under cover, if equipped
     
    Negative battery cable

Testing & Troubleshooting



Free Running Test
  1. Place the starter motor in a vise equipped with soft jaws and connect a fully-charged 12-volt battery to the starter motor as follows:

  3. Connect a test ammeter (100-ampere scale) and carbon pile rheostat in series between the positive battery terminal and starter motor terminal.
  4.  
  5. Connect a voltmeter (15-volt scale) across the starter motor.
  6.  
  7. Rotate carbon pile to full-resistance position.
  8.  
  9. Connect the battery cable from the negative battery terminal to the starter motor body.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the rheostat until the battery positive voltage shown by the voltmeter is 11 V.
  12.  
  13. Confirm that the maximum amperage is within the specifications and that the starter motor turns smoothly and freely. Current: maximum 90 Amps
