Distributor

Print

All of the engines covered in this section are distributorless.

Only the 1998 4-cylinder engine uses a distributor ignition. All other engines are distributorless.

Installation

3.0L 12v
  1. Install the distributor by performing the following:
    CAUTION
Be careful not to turn it to the No. 4 cylinder compression top dead center by mistake.

Turn the crankshaft so that the No. 1 cylinder is at compression top dead center.

Align the distributor housing at gear mating marks.

  3. Connect the high tension cable.
  4.
  5. Install the spark plug.
  6.
  7. Install the spark plug cable by performing the following:
    NOTE
Improper arrangement of spark plug cables will induce voltage between the cables, causing mis-firing and development of a surge at acceleration in high speed operation. Therefore, be careful to arrange the spark plug cables properly by the following procedure.

Install the spark plug cable clamps as shown below.

Timing Disturbed
  1. Install a new distributor housing O-ring
  2.
  3. Rotate the engine so No. 1 piston is on TDC of compression stroke and the timing mark on the vibration damper is aligned with T on the timing indicator.
  4.
  5. Position the distributor so the rotor is aligned with the No. 1 ignition wire on the distributor cap. Take note that the distributor shaft is fully engaged and the housing is fully seated.
    NOTE
Some distributor caps may contain runners inside the cap. If so, be sure the rotor is pointing to where the No. 1 runner originates inside the cap and not where the No. 1 ignition wire plugs into the cap.

  6.
  7. Install or connect the following:

Retaining nut finger-tight only. Connect the vacuum hose(s), if removed.

    Distributor electrical harness

    Distributor cap and secure

    Negative battery cable

  8.
  9. Check and adjust the ignition timing. Torque the retaining nut to 115 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).

Removal

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

Distributor pick-up lead wires and vacuum hose(s), if equipped.

Distributor cap retaining clips or screws and lift off the distributor cap with all ignition wires connected. Remove the coil wire if necessary.

  2.
  3. Matchmark the rotor and distributor housing and matchmark the distributor housing and engine.
    NOTE
Do not crank the engine during this procedure. If the engine is cranked, the matchmark must be disregarded.

Retaining nut and remove the distributor from the engine.
